I've uploaded this one mostly for posterity. Overall 'King of the Zombies" is interesting and cute. However, it's fairly slow moving.

Starring Dick Purcell, Joan Woodbury and Mantan Moreland (who steals the show)

SYNOPSIS

The legendary Orson Welles brings us his production of DRACULA circa 1938. Welles voices the lead of Bram Stoker's iconic story in this vintage radio adaptation.

The Mercury Theater's inventive cast and Welles' extraordinary storytelling make this classic radio drama an unforgettable experience.

This is golden age radio programming at its finest. Grab a drink and sit back to immerse yourself in the mesmerizing world of vampires, suspense, and horror.

ABOUT WELLES' MERCURY THEATER

In 1937, Welles and the Mercury company earned a reputation for their inventive adaptation of William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar set in contemporary Fascist Italy.

They moved on to productions of The Shoemaker's Holiday, Heartbreak House, Too Much Johnson and Danton's Death in 1938. In 1939 Five Kings was produced along with The Green Goddess. The last theatrical production of the company was Native Son in 1941.

Welles had already worked extensively in radio drama, playing the title character in The Shadow for a year and directing a seven-part adaptation of Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, both for the Mutual Broadcasting System.

In 1938, he was offered a chance to direct his own weekly, hour-long radio series, initially promoted as First Person Singular. However, this title was never announced on the air. Radio Guide initially mentioned the series' debut as Mercury Theatre before later listing it as The Mercury Theatre on the Air.

Welles insisted his Mercury company — actors and crew — be involved in the radio series.
This was an unprecedented and expensive request, especially for one so young as Welles (he was only 23 at the time of airing Mercury Theater).

Most episodes of Mercury Theater Radio dramatized works of classic and contemporary literature. It remains perhaps the most highly regarded radio drama anthology series ever broadcast, most likely due to the creativity of Orson Welles.

This is one of the earliest films of Eugene Sandow who was known then as The Modern Hercules.
Eugen Sandow - born Friedrich Wilhelm Müller - on the 2nd of April 1867 and passed on the 14th of October 1925 was a German bodybuilder and showman from Prussia.

Born in Königsberg, Sandow became interested in bodybuilding at the age of ten during a visit to Italy. He spent time in the circus, studying under strongman Ludwig Durlacher in the late 1880s.

On Durlacher's recommendation, he began entering strongman competitions, performing in matches against leading figures in the sport such as Charles Sampson, Frank Bienkowski, and Henry McCann.

In 1901 he organized what is believed to be the world's first major bodybuilding competition.

Set in London's Royal Albert Hall, Sandow judged the event alongside author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and athlete/sculptor Charles Lawes-Wittewronge.

I found these audios in the Library of Congress at https//loc.gov

These are real live Americans reading their letters to the president in 1942. The president at the time was Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR).

I was struck by how we have changed as I listened to these readings. The cadence and rhythm and even the emphasis and emotion of how Americans spoke by then was so much more civilized and sophisticated.

The amount of thought that went into these letters is clear and very interesting. Much of what they have to say revolves around the war that Hitler was waging in Europe.

I've added timely music for emphasis. Besides that there is no editing of these readings. Enjoy!

A Night in the Show was Charlie Chaplin's 12th film for Essanay. It was made at Majestic Studio in Los Angeles in the fall of 1915. Chaplin played two roles: one as Mr. Pest and one as Mr. Rowdy.

The film was created from Chaplin's stage work from a play called Mumming Birds (a.k.a. A Night at an English Music Hall in the United States) with the Karno Company from London.

Chaplin performed this play during his U.S. tours with Fred Karno company and decided to bring some of this play to his film work. Edna Purviance played a minor role as a lady in the audience.

The Vagabond, Chaplin’s third Mutual film, was an important step in Chaplin’s career, in which he interweaves pathos as an integral part of the comedy. Indeed, The Vagabond is the prototype of The Kid (1921) and The Circus (1928).

Chaplin employs the same romantic triangle seen in The Tramp (1915) that he would revisit again in Sunnyside (1919) and The Circus. He imposed an unlikely happy ending on The Vagabond, in which the gypsy drudge demands that the car she is being taken away in be turned around to bring Charlie along with her.

Legend has it that Chaplin originally intended the film to end with a scene in which Charlie attempts a watery suicide, is saved by an ugly farm woman, and plunges in again after one look at his rescuer.

However, the few surviving outtakes from the film do not substantiate this claim. The Vagabond relies less on outright comedy than Chaplin’s earlier work. His direction of the film shows sensitivity and restraint in his treatment of the melodramatic material, such as the dramatic device of the lost child finally identified by her unique birthmark.

Chaplin’s performance reveals great warmth and depth. Strains of The Vagabond appear in many of Chaplin’s later films. The film’s ambiguous ending regarding Charlie’s future with the girl and his care of her foreshadows Charlie’s future relationship with Jackie Coogan in The Kid.

The cruel gypsy chief is the precursor of the cruel step-father of The Circus. The scenes in the film of Charlie as the violinist (particularly Charlie, in a musical frenzy, falling into a tub of water) anticipate Limelight (1952). The Vagabond clearly shows Chaplin’s development of the film elements that Chaplin would use throughout his career, particularly the blending of comedy and drama.

Based on a play by Philip Barry, this sophisticated and surprisingly progressive comedy, is about a man trying to justify his love for both his wife and his mistress.

Tom Collier has had a great relationship with Daisy, but when he decides to marry, it is not Daisy whom he asks, it is Cecelia.

After the marriage, Tom is bored with the social scene and the obligations of his life. He publishes books that will sell, not books that he wants to write. Even worse, he has his old friend working as a butler and Cecelia wants him fired. When Tom tries to get back together with Daisy to renew the feelings that he once felt, Daisy turns the tables on him and leaves to protect both of them.

The Animal Kingdom (1932) stars Ann Harding, Leslie Howard, and Myrna Loy

A reading of Charles Bukowski's "And The Moon And The Stars And The World"

Long walks at night—
that's what good for the soul:
peeking into windows
watching tired housewives
trying to fight off
their beer-maddened husbands.

by Charles Bukowski

This is an interesting and wonderful example of the type of productions early television studios were putting out. This is from The Tales of Tomorrow and it's entitled "The Search For The Flying Saucer " It stars Jack Carter, Olive Deering and Vaughn Taylor as Crazy John.

It's a delightfully spooky and entertaining way to warn the public that their government was hushing up the biggest story in history.

Everything about this episode was excellent: The acting was over-the-top, but passionate and believable, the set and music were dark and moody, and the content, quite simply out of this world!

Vaughn Taylor plays "Crazy John". Taylor is one of that wonderful genre which is the "Character Actor." He has, perhaps a name that would not be recognized, but his face is very familiar.

This show is absolutely worth the watch. If you appreciate the history of our entertainment industry, The Search For The Flying Saucer then take a half hour to watch this.

Even though this episode has received bad reviews on IMDB, it's not a bad show at all. Perhaps the reviewers were too young and/or unsophisticated to appreciate this program.

Here's the gist of the storyline for this episode...

It has several plot lines - Flying saucers and infiltrators from another planet, a sinister conspiracy of silence and a woman torn between her mission and her man.

A genuine sci-fi plot line that was in full bloom during the late 40s and through the 50s in real life. It's a dark allegory for red panic, as America is swept by fears of communist infiltrators, communist conspiracies and the sinister silence of the 'comrades' plotting to do us in. (Think the McCarthy era)

From the web archive...

"This is a typical sex exploitation film from the early 1930s - complete with wild parties, sex out of wedlock, lesbianism, etc. A chorus girl's exposure to the "casting couch" also exposes her to syphilis.

Exploitation filmmakers hoped to capitalize on the taboo subjects of venereal disease, sex before marriage, lesbianism, etc. while skirting the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930 which forbade a film from containing such content.

Films like this would tour the United States for years - mostly being shown in rundown, skid row theaters. This film has been re-edited and re-titled ("Human Wreckage", "They Must Be Told", "Trial Marriage", "About Trial Marriage") many times to attract the same audience to film, to take advantage of a taboo subject which may have gotten press recently or to appease local censors who disapproved of the film's content."

You can find more information regarding this film on its IMDb page.

Also, if you are interested in the rich, uniquely American history of exploitation films, there are two excellent books on the subject:

"Forbidden Fruit - The Golden Age of the Exploitation Film", Felicia Feaster and Bret Wood, Midnight Marquee Press, 1999.

"Bold! Daring! Shocking! True! A History of Exploitation Films, 1919 - 1959" Eric Schaefer, Duke University Press, 1999
