The format was similar to that of classic old time radio shows like The Mysterious Traveler and The Whistler, in that the episodes were introduced by host E. G. Marshall who provided pithy wisdom and commentary throughout. Unlike the hosts of those earlier programs, Marshall is fully mortal, merely someone whose heightened insight and erudition plunge the listener into the world of the macabre.

As with Himan Brown's prior Inner Sanctum Mysteries, each episode of CBS Radio Mystery Theater opened and closed with the ominous sound of a creaking door. This sound effect is accompanied by Marshall's greeting, "Come in!… Welcome. I'm E. G. Marshall." At each show's conclusion, the door swings shut, and Marshall signs off with: "Until next time, pleasant… dreams?" (Wikipedia)

The film Crime Does Not Pay later spawned a radio series of the same name. The radio show was recorded and broadcast at MGM's New York station, WMGM. Written by Ira Marion and directed by Marx B. Loeb, it aired for two years (October 10, 1949 – October 10, 1951), including repeats. It moved to the Mutual Broadcasting System for its final run (January 7-December 22, 1952).[1] For the most part, B movie actors were featured but occasionally one of MGM's major stars would make an appearance. These included Bela Lugosi, Everett Sloane, Ed Begley, John Loder and Lionel Stander. After the play, the actors usually returned to speak with the audience as themselves. (Wikipedia)

The radio version of I Was a Communist for the FBI consisted of 78 episodes syndicated by the Frederick W. Ziv Company to more than 600 stations, including KNX in Los Angeles, California, with original episodes running from March 30, 1952, to September 20, 1953. The program was made without the cooperation of the FBI. Real-life undercover agent Matt Cvetic was portrayed by Dana Andrews. The show had a budget of $12,000 per week, a very high cost to produce a radio show at the time.

The program frequently dealt with the great stress that Cvetic was under, as he covertly infiltrated a local Communist Party cell. There were many personal and family problems caused by his being a Communist as well as a certain amount of mental torment. He saw the party as being hypocritical and a great danger to society.

When a vicious criminal is acquitted, the Major decides he is going to be tried again convicted and executed. However, his son in law the district attorney does not agree with the kangaroo court the major has in mind.

Theatre-Five (aka Theater-Five or Theatre 5) was a radio drama series, presented by the ABC Radio Network between 1964 and 1965. The series used an anthology format, presenting a number of short (20-minute) radio plays across a number of genres, a number of which reflected topical issues contemporary with its airing.

Writers for the show varied, as did actors, although a principal cast included George O. Petrie, Brett Morrison, Jackson Beck, Robert Dryden, Elliott Reid, Court Benson, Cliff Carpenter, and Bryna Raeburn. The show's 1965 run featured several well-known actors, including an early role for James Earl Jones (Incident on US 1), a pre-M*A*S*H Alan Alda (A Bad Day's Work), and Ed Begley (The Pigeon) three years after his Academy Award win. Another Theatre-Five actor was Romeo Muller,[1] who also wrote stories for the series[2] but who became best known for his work with Rankin/Bass Productions such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. It starred Roger Delgado as Professor Josef Gomez, Maurice Denham as Hugh Deverill MP, David Spenser as Dr. Ken Richards and Miriam Margolyes as Mrs. Wilson. The producer was John Tydeman and sound effects were by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

The Slide was Victor Pemberton's first science fiction story; it was accepted as a radio serial commissioned by future Doctor Who producer Peter Bryant.

BBC Genome lists the program as first transmitted on the BBC Light Program on 13 February 1966 at 19:00 with the next six episodes following weekly. BBC Radio 4 Extra broadcast a repeat run of the serial 10 - 18 August 2020.

Victor Pemberton originally submitted The Slide to the BBC TV series Doctor Who in 1964; it was rejected by script-editor David Whitaker, but following a revision it did inspire the story Fury from the Deep. Mildred Pierce is a 1945 American melodrama/film noir directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Joan Crawford, Jack Carson, and Zachary Scott, also featuring Eve Arden, Ann Blyth, and Bruce Bennett. Based on the 1941 novel by James M. Cain, this was Crawford's first starring role for Warner Bros., after leaving Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. In 1996, Mildred Pierce was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected for preservation in the United States Library of Congress National Film Registry (Wikipedia)
