A recent survey revealed that a quarter of individuals aged 18 to 34 confessed they had never answered their phone. When asked how they respond to incoming calls, many said they simply ignore them, with some opting to Google the number or text back instead of returning the call. Over half of the respondents assumed that an unexpected call meant bad news, nearly 70% preferred texting to calling, and 37% favored voice notes over phone conversations.
In contrast, among those aged 35 to 54, only 1% preferred voice notes to traditional phone calls. Freya Mallard, a 26-year-old comedian from North London, exemplified this trend, stating she only answers calls if she expects them. "We just don’t do spontaneous calls anymore — I prefer a voice note, there’s much less pressure," she said. Mallard, who is pregnant, plans to announce the birth of her child on social media instead of calling loved ones. “It’s the best way to let everyone know without having to think about who to tell first and figure out what to actually say,” she added.
Similarly, 20-year-old Calum Godson from Tring, Hertfordshire, has never made a call on his phone, answering it only for his mother. "I don’t see the point of using the phone to call someone, it’s much easier to just message them," he stated.
The survey, conducted by price comparison website Uswitch, polled 2,000 people across various age groups. Simrat Sharma, a mobile phone expert at Uswitch, observed that while traditional phone calls are becoming rare, they are still valued for sharing significant life moments. “Gen Z and younger millennials increasingly prefer ‘low pressure’ voice notes, which signal there is less urgency to respond,” Sharma explained.
