A German folk song, based on the poem "Brüderschaft", published by Wilhelm Müller (1794-1827) in 1821. In 1830, Franz Kugler published a setting of the poem that has remained little popular to this day. In 1833, the melody, which is still sung today, appeared in the "Liederbuch für deutsche Künstler".
Before his marriage to Adelheid von Basedow on May 21, 1821, Wilhelm Müller met with her brother Carl von Basedow in the Krug zum Grünen Kranze in Halle to ask him for permission to marry. Basedow had arrived too early and while waiting he enjoyed the amenities of the inn and the romantic view of the Giebichenstein castle ruins.
He fell asleep, probably as a result of drinking so much wine. When Wilhelm Müller arrived at the "Krug", he didn't recognize him at first, but based on Basedow's resemblance to his sister, he realized who had fallen asleep waiting for him. Müller wrote this poem to commemorate this encounter.
