Guðrúnarkviða II (The Second Lay of Guðrún), also known as Guðrúnarkviða hin forna (The Old Lay of Guðrún) | The Poetic Edda
Translated by Henry A. Bellows | Recorded by Folkbuilder Nicholas Rice

King Þjóðrekr was staying at the court of Atli, after he had lost most of his warriors in battle. Þjóðrekr and Atli's queen Guðrún were alone together & discussed their sorrows. Guðrún told him that she was a young maiden when her father Gjúki gave her away to Sigurd with a dowry of gold. Then her brothers murdered her hero Sigurð, & his horse, Grani, ran off to find her, & she began to cry, as she understood what had happened. When she met her brothers, Gunnarr was bowing his head, but Högni told her the news that Sigurð had been slain. He further told her that she could find Sigurð on the road. Guðrún went to search for what was left by the wolves & found Sigurð. When she found him, she did not cry, although she was so sad that she did not want to live anymore. She left the mountains & travelled for five days, until she saw the hall of Halfr, in Denmark, where she stayed for three & a half years with Thora, the daughter of Hakon. Thora & Guðrún enjoyed themselves by weaving tapestries of southern halls, Danish swans, & warriors. Guðrún's mother Grimhildr asked her sons, Gunnarr & Högni, what kind of wergild they would like to give their sister for the killing of her husband & son, & they were both ready to compensate their sister. Guðrún met her mother, brothers, & Valdar, the king of Denmark. They wanted to give her gifts to console her, but she did not trust them. Then, her mother gave her something to drink, a potion of forgetfulness. The poem relates that Guðrún forgot & the three kings kneeled before her & Grimhildr began to speak. Her mother told her that she gave her all her father's wealth, & that she would also have Buðli's wealth because she was to become Atli's wife. Guðrún answered that she did not wish to marry Atli, but her mother responded that with Atli she would be as happy as if both Sigurð & her son Sigmund were still alive. She responded that her mother should not be so eager to giver her away to the Huns, & she prophesied that Atli would kill Gunnarr & tear out the heart of Högni. Grímhildr began to weep when she heard the prophecy & told her that she was forced to give her away to Atli. She was never happy with him & she lost her sons when her brothers died, & she would kill Atli. She travelled to Atli first a week through cold lands, then a week on water, & lastly a week through land that lacked water.

Guðrúnarkviða III (The Third Lay of Guðrún) | The Poetic Edda
Translated by Henry A. Bellows | Recorded by Folkbuilder Nicholas Rice

Herkja, one of Atli's former concubines, was serving as a maid at his court. She reported to Atli that she had seen Guðrún together with King Þjóðrekr, which made Atli very angry. He approached Guðrún and she asked him what was the matter. He stated that Herkja accussed her of sleeping with Þjóðrekr. Guðrún answered that she was innocent and could swear on the sacred white stone that she had not been with Þjóðrekr in that way. She had only talked with Þjóðrekr about their sorrows in secret. Þjóðrekr had arrived with thirty warriors and he had lost all of them, while Atli, her husband, had murdered all her brothers and all the men of her people. Gunnarr could no longer come, and she could no longer greet Högni. She had lost both her beloved brothers and she would like to avenge Högni with her sword. She declared that she wanted payment for her sorrows and she suggested the ordeal of boiling water, for which Atli should summon Saxi, the king of the Southrons, who could hallow the kettle. Then, the poem passes to the execution of the ordeal and what happened to Herkja—Guðrún's hand is submerged in the boiling water and come up unharmed, whereas Herkja does the same and is badly burned; Herkja is their after flung into the bog and thus Guðrún's woes were no more.

Brot af Sigurðarkviðu (Fragment of The Lay of Sigurð) | The Poetic Edda
Translated by Henry A. Bellows | Recorded by Folkbuilder Nicholas Rice

Brot af Sigurðarkviðu is a fragment of a longer lay, suspected at up to 200 stanzas, about Sigurð, the dragon slayer of legend. We begin with the introduction as written by Bellows, focusing mostly on the make-up of the rest of the fragment that was missing, (the missing section being 8 consecutive leaves (15 pages each) that's whereabouts are unknown — and could have included not only the beginning of Brot but also is speculated as possibly including a presently unknown poem or two).

The poem begins as Hogni inquires to Gunnar as to why he slayed the hero-king Sigurð. Brynhild berates them about the death of her lover. Sigurð's wife, Guthrun, has a mournful dream, which Brynhild interprets as a curse on Gunnar. The poem summarizes around different stories about the details surround Sigurð's death, stating "But in this they are all agreed, that they deceived him in his trust of them, and fell upon him when he was lying down and unprepared."

Fáfnismál (The Lay of Fáfnir) | The Poetic Edda
Translated by Henry A. Bellows | Recorded by Folkbuilder Nicholas Rice

Fáfnismál recounts a conversation between Sigurd and the dragon Fafnir, who was once a human transformed by greed and cursed to guard a hoard of treasure.

In the poem, Fafnir recounts his tragic tale of greed, betrayal, and transformation. He explains how his insatiable desire for the cursed gold turned him into a dragon. Despite the grim circumstances, Fafnir imparts valuable advice to Sigurd about the dangers of wealth, emphasizing the destructive power of greed.

The conversation between Sigurd and Fafnir not only serves as a crucial moment in the Völsunga Saga but also explores themes of the consequences of avarice and the transformative nature of greed. Fafnir's fate becomes a cautionary tale, warning against the corrosive effects of unchecked ambition and materialism.

The poem also adds depth to Sigurd's character, showcasing his bravery and wisdom as he engages with Fafnir. The dragon's revelations contribute to Sigurd's understanding of the complexities of fate and the moral lessons embedded in his heroic journey.

Fáfnismál is a narrative gem within the broader Völsunga Saga, offering a poignant exploration of the perils of greed, the transformative impact of unchecked desires, and the moral lessons entwined in the tragic tale of Fafnir the dragon.

Sigurd, armed with Gram, faces the formidable dragon Fafnir. The encounter leads to a fierce battle, resulting in Sigurd's victory and Fafnir's demise. During the struggle, Sigurd gains the ability to understand the language of birds, a recurring motif in Norse mythology symbolizing enhanced wisdom.

Reginsmál highlights the themes of treachery, heroism, and the inevitability of fate. Regin's deceitful intentions contrast with Sigurd's bravery and eventual triumph. The forging of Gram and the subsequent slaying of Fafnir represent pivotal moments in the Völsunga Saga, shaping the destiny of the heroic protagonist.

The poem also explores the consequences of actions and the interconnectedness of events in the larger tapestry of Norse mythology. Sigurd's acquisition of the dragon's hoard sets the stage for future challenges and tragedies, emphasizing the inescapable web of fate that envelops the characters.

Reginsmál unfolds a crucial episode in the Völsunga Saga, depicting the intricate dynamics between Sigurd and Regin, the forging of the powerful sword Gram, and the heroic confrontation with the dragon Fafnir. The poem delves into themes of deceit, heroism, and the unfolding threads of destiny within Norse mythology.

Helgakviða Hundingsbana II (The Second Lay of Helgi Hundingsbane) | Also known as Völsungakviða in forna | The Poetic Edda
Translated by Henry A. Bellows | Recorded by Folkbuilder Nicholas Rice

Helgakviða Hundingsbana II continues the saga of Helgi Hundingsbane, a legendary Norse hero. The narrative is presented as a dialogue between the valkyrie Sigrún and an aged woman who reveals Helgi's tragic fate.

The poem begins with Sigrún grieving Helgi's death, expressing her sorrow at the loss of her beloved. The aged woman, who is revealed to be the valkyrie Kara, shares her knowledge of Helgi's afterlife. She recounts how Helgi, after his death, was taken to Valhalla by Odin's maidens and now resides in the splendid hall of the slain heroes.

Helgi's posthumous adventures are narrated, depicting his continued heroic feats in the afterlife. The poem highlights the notion of an eternal warrior's existence in Valhalla, engaging in battles and preparing for the eventual conflict at Ragnarök.

The narrative then shifts to Sigrún's encounter with a reanimated Helgi, who returns to the mortal realm to visit her. Sigrún, overjoyed at Helgi's return, questions him about the nature of life after death. Helgi, however, reveals that their reunion is temporary, as he is destined to return to the afterlife. Sigrún laments the fleeting nature of their time together.

Helgakviða Hundingsbana II explores themes of love, death, and the heroic afterlife. The poem reflects the Norse conception of an afterlife reserved for brave warriors who die in battle, as exemplified by Helgi's presence in Valhalla. The fleeting reunion between Helgi and Sigrún underscores the transitory nature of mortal joy and the inevitability of the hero's eternal destiny.

The narrative also touches upon the cyclical nature of existence, as Helgi continues to play a role in the cosmic battles leading up to Ragnarök. This cyclical theme aligns with the Norse belief in the recurring cycles of creation, destruction, and rebirth.

Helgakviða Hundingsbana II is a poignant continuation of the saga of Helgi Hundingsbane, exploring themes of love, mortality, and the hero's eternal destiny in Valhalla. The poem provides insights into the Norse understanding of the afterlife and the cyclical nature of heroic existence within the context of their mythological tradition.

Helgakviða Hundingsbana I (The First Lay of Helgi Hundingsbane) | Also known as Völsungakviða | The Poetic Edda
Translated by Henry A. Bellows | Recorded by Folkbuilder Nicholas Rice

Helgakviða Hundingsbana I narrates the heroic exploits and tragic fate of Helgi Hundingsbane, a legendary Norse hero. The poem is framed as a conversation between Helgi and the valkyrie Sigrún.

The narrative begins with Helgi's ancestry, tracing his lineage to the god Odin. Helgi is described as a warrior of unmatched skill and bravery, fated for greatness. Sigrún, a valkyrie, becomes enamored with Helgi and decides to aid him in battle against King Hunding, who is her father's enemy.

Helgi embarks on a journey to confront King Hunding, leading to a fierce and bloody battle. With Sigrún's supernatural assistance, Helgi emerges victorious, slaying Hunding and his sons. The valkyrie's intervention underscores the intertwining of the mortal and divine realms in Norse mythology.

Following the battle, Helgi and Sigrún declare their love for each other. However, the poem takes a tragic turn as Helgi receives a prophecy about his impending death. Despite Sigrún's pleas, Helgi faces his fate with stoic acceptance. The poem concludes with Helgi's death in battle against a supernatural army led by the sorceress Hati.

Helgakviða Hundingsbana I explores themes of heroism, fate, and the intersection of mortal and divine forces. Helgi's journey and triumph over Hunding demonstrate the archetype of the heroic warrior in Norse mythology, while the tragic prophecy and Helgi's eventual demise add layers of complexity to the narrative.

The role of Sigrún, a valkyrie, emphasizes the divine intervention in mortal affairs, particularly in matters of love and war. The valkyrie's love for Helgi transcends the boundaries between the living and the supernatural, reflecting the blurred lines between mortality and the divine in Norse mythology.

The tragic element of the poem lies in Helgi's acceptance of his fate, highlighting the Norse belief in the inevitability of destiny. The narrative suggests that even the most valiant heroes are subject to the whims of fate and the cyclical nature of life and death.

Helgakviða Hundingsbana I is a narrative poem that weaves together themes of heroism, love, and fate within the context of Norse mythology. The interactions between mortal and divine characters, coupled with Helgi's tragic destiny, contribute to the rich tapestry of the heroic saga.

The poem explores themes of love, heroism, and the supernatural, blending elements of romance and war.

Helgi and Sigrún's union faces challenges, particularly in the form of a vengeful king named Högne. The narrative unfolds with battles and conflicts, emphasizing the heroic nature of Helgi and his determination to overcome obstacles for the sake of love and honor.

The poem concludes with Helgi's tragic death in battle. Despite his prowess, Helgi falls victim to treachery, fulfilling the tragic fate foretold in the initial prophecies. The valkyrie Sigrún mourns Helgi's death, and the poem leaves a sense of sorrow and inevitability.

Helgakviða Hjörvarðssonar involves exploring the themes of fate and heroism. Helgi's life is shaped by prophecies, and his heroic deeds are juxtaposed with the tragic inevitability of his demise. The poem reflects the complex interplay between mortal choices and preordained destiny within Norse mythology.

The inclusion of valkyries, supernatural beings associated with Odin and the afterlife, adds a mystical dimension to the narrative. The valkyrie Sigrún's love for Helgi and their union highlight the intertwining of the divine and mortal realms, emphasizing the transcendent nature of the hero's journey.

Hrafnagaldr Óðins (Odin's Raven's Song), also known as Forspjallsljóð (Prelude Poem) | From Edda Sæmundar Hinns Frôða: The Edda of Sæmund the Learned, Volumes 1-2
Translated by Benjamin Thorpe, [1866] | Recorded by Folkbuilder Nicholas Rice

Hrafnagaldr Óðins is a complex and enigmatic poem that describes a cosmic battle, featuring Odin, the chief of the Norse gods, and various mythical beings.

The poem begins with Odin's journey through the realms, encountering various supernatural entities and creatures. He seeks knowledge from a giantess and engages in a conversation with a wise eagle, a hawk, and a falcon. The birds, often interpreted as embodiments of Odin's wisdom or different aspects of his character, share information about the impending doom of Ragnarök, the apocalyptic event in Norse mythology.

The central focus of Hrafnagaldr Óðins is the cosmic battle at Ragnarök. The poem describes the gathering of powerful beings, including gods, giants, and monsters, for the final confrontation. The imagery is vivid and portrays the chaos and destruction that will unfold during this catastrophic event.

Hrafnagaldr Óðins involves deciphering the symbolic and mythic elements within the poem. The birds, especially the raven, hold significant symbolism in Norse mythology, often associated with Odin and his wisdom. The poem's structure, with its repetition and refrain-like lines, adds a ritualistic or incantatory quality, suggesting a ceremonial or magical aspect to Odin's quest for knowledge.

The emphasis on the impending Ragnarök reflects the Norse belief in cyclical cosmology, where the world is destined to undergo a series of cycles of creation, destruction, and rebirth. Odin's relentless pursuit of knowledge, even if it reveals grim prophecies, aligns with his role as the god of wisdom and the sacrifices he is willing to make for that knowledge.

Hrafnagaldr Óðins is a complex and mysterious poem that delves into the cosmic themes of knowledge, destiny, and the impending cataclysm of Ragnarök. The vivid imagery, the symbolic representation of Odin's wisdom through birds, and the ritualistic elements contribute to the poem's enigmatic and mystical nature within the broader context of Norse mythology.

Asatru is an expression of the native, pre-Christian spirituality of Europe. More specifically, it is the religion by which the Ethnic European Folk have traditionally related to the Divine and to the world around them.
From Iceland to Russia, from the frozen north of Scandinavia to the Mediterranean, the Ethnic European Folk wandered and settled over a span of thousands of years. Today, their descendants are spread around the world. We may refer to ourselves as Americans or English, Germans or Canadians, but behind these labels lurks an older, more essential identity. Our forefathers were Angles and Saxons, Lombards and Heruli, Goths and Vikings – and, as sons and daughters of these peoples, we are united by ties of blood and culture undimmed by the centuries.

Asatru is our native religion. It gave our ancestors comfort in millennia past, and it can give us strength and inspiration today. The word “Asatru” comes to us from Old Norse, the tongue of ancient Scandinavia, where it means “those loyal to the Gods.” Since the ancient Scandinavian version of our religion is the best documented, it has given us much of Asatru’s terminology and imagery. The soul of Asatru, however, is not confined to the Scandinavian model, but encapsulates the belief of all the Ethnic European Folk. Indeed, Asatru reflects the deeper religiosity common to virtually all the nations of Europe.
