This video photo montage demonstrates the painting process of a landscape oil painting titled “The Creek” by the artist Nicolas Szuhodovszky.
The technique with wich it is painted is an indirect painting method consisting of multiple stages, composed of glazes, scumbles and opaque paint layers.
This was a common practice among painters from the 15th on to the19th century. It has also been called the Brown School method of painting.
Used by such renowned artists as Leonardo da Vinci, Tiziano Vecellio (Titian), Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Peter Paul Rubens, Jacques-Louis David, John Constable, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, just to name a few.
The method was usually divided into 3 stages:
1st layer – Grisaille/Monochrome
2nd layer – Dead Coloring
3rd layer – Final Saturated Colors and Glazes
