And if you think about it, the arbitrary nature of the animals that Yahweh labeled unclean actually makes a lot more sense than if the animals on the list were prohibited for obvious reasons. For example, if certain animals were labeled ritually unclean because they made people sick, then the Gentiles would have ended up avoiding those animals for the same reason. And then Israel would be no different from all the other nations. This would simply become a list of animals that everyone avoided because they caused health problems. What makes Israel special, what sets them apart as holy, is that this is a list given by Yahweh and it's to be obeyed for no other reason than it was given by Yahweh. It's not a list that can be logically deduced from nature. It's a list that was supernaturally determined by God. Which made it a very distinguishing marker of His people. If you came across a tribe in the ancient near East who wouldn't eat pigs or camels or rabbits, you knew that they belonged to Yahweh, the God of Israel.
