It's gotta be with you to do any good, it's also gotta be accessible.

I like adding a short lanyard. Training is paramount to success and you will need to be aware in order to not get caught.

The old toolbox analogy is great, but we aren't building a house or turning wrenches on the lawnmower.

We must have a clear picture of what we want and how we can get it.
If we truly want to live a long and full life, our actions should support that.

Define that goal and what it looks like.

1. Know thyself and what sets you off. Practice self control. Choose kind words when you can.

2. Be fit, stay fit.

3. Know how to fight.

4. Have the tools and know how to use them.

5. Know the law.

6. Make good choices.

Getting into and out of various shooting positions is part of the training. It's not just pressing the trigger.

Shooting from your knees is a fast way to shrink your profile, adjust shooting angles, see to shoot under obstructions and more.

Incorporate it into dry and live fire.

There are so many expensive targets out there.
Here are some ideas for you.

I hope you find it helpful.

We appreciate you and I hope to see you in class.

A quick review of the Garmin Xero C1Pro Chronograph

If maksmanship matters to you, you want to know some things about your bullets, a most important factor is how fast it's going.

We get ballistic data for each student in every class with long guns. Smaller stuff packs easier when on the road.

Here is my thoughts on this data gathering device.

At the heart of anything we do with our hands, there are fundamental movements we should know.

This is true for driving, bricklaying, chopping wood or vegetables, stiching a wound, or drilling teeth.
The caveat is that there are best practices and not so good ones.

Let's all strive to have Repeatable, Reliable and Robust systems with our firearms.

A doctor told me last year that I
may not regain full use of my arm.

F that.

I once could do 30 or more clean reps on both sides.

10 months ago, I could not hold a bar of soap with that right arm, let alone do push-ups.

Onwards

Do you every feel like you are hunting for your sights or dot?

Through consistency, we build a repeatable process.

Let's do it together.

Be safe. Use appropriate Eye and Ear protection and a safe training area.

It's a simple concept aften made overcomplicated.

Let's break it down together.

My pal Super Dave says,
"You are either shooting and maneuvering or being shot and maneuvered upon."

Let's get good at this.

On a recent trip the airline lost my firearm case for several days.
I travel a lot and there was a bunch of points worth sharing, so I sat down and did this video.

The goal would be to help you not have the same issue.

Something else to help would be the video we did a few years back on traveling with firearms.

Here it is-

‎@PlasticaseInc  maker of Nanuk
they are the best cases in my opinion.

We think we need more gear, more stuff and more gadgets. There is nothing wrong with stuff, but it is no substitute for good practices and training.

I knew some great carpenters who built the most amazing homes with a small tool collection. They knew how to use those tools well.

1. Define the goal.
2. Is the training I'm doing taking me closer or farther from that goal?
3. Spend more time training and less time shopping for stuff.
4. Choose a defined standard such as a target and work with it until you have consistency. The printer paper and post it notes are standards.
5. After accuracy is obtained, you can add variable such as movement, multiple shots, time standards, etc. I suggest you add one at a time.

I want to have a frank chat on getting better and why some don't.

Shooting well matters. Get good at it.

Know and understand the law where you are.

Train to be fit and level-headed.

Make good choices.

In this 3 day course, the students work on everything from marksmanship and drawing from a holster to zeroing a rifle and hitting hundreds of yards from the targets.
Everyone did an excellent job and worked very hard.

What distance should you zero?
Why?
How big a target do you wish to be capable of hitting and at what distances, without having to adjust your point of aim.
Said easier, let's pick a distance that we can just put the dot on the target and run the gun.

A few points as you'll see, Marksmanship matters. If you can't hold the gun steady and press the trigger without disturbing the sights/dot them you will want to get a rest to shoot off of.

7-15 yards are very common, zero distances for handguns. You will see some others as well.
What is the goal.

Remember!
You will want to get real data at various distances to see where your actual gun/dot combination is hitting.

A little more on Point Blank
I'll borrow this from Ron Spomer.
MPBR or maximum point blank range-
is the distance over which a shooter can hold his sights dead on the center of the target and hit it. The bullet may strike the upper or lower edge or any point in between, but it will not miss (unless the shooter flinches or pulls the barrel off target.) To the surprise of many, with the right cartridge, bullet and target, this “dead-on hold” can stretch past 400 yards.

Thanks for joining me on the range.

I hope this was valuable for you. We appreciate you.

Visit Carrytrainer.com for information on classes, speaking engagements, podcasts, and merch.

A squib happens when a bullet becomes lodged in the barrel. Usually you will hear a much less loud pop, instead of a usual bang.

It is quite rare, but I've seen more and more of them as people have been buying ammo from untested makers. Ome class we had 20 or more. A bunch of guys had ammo from a company that messed up loading. That maker went out of business.

If it happens, stop, don't fire again.
clear the gun and safely inspect it.
Use a wood or brass dowel to remove the obstruction or take it to a gun smith.

Here is the whole video.
https://youtu.be/rl_kLwbfKEk?si=BD6alWLGYBVmBf6k

There much to learn from these types of cases.

We discuss our thoughts and feelings on this case.

Our goal should always be to avoid trouble when we can. If we are forced into, we ought to be capable of explaining what happened and why.

Study up.

Carrytrainer.com exists to remind people that we are all our own cavalry, we must be prepared to ride in to effect our own rescue. Be it an attack, car wreck, life threatening illness or poverty; we need to develop the "stuff" to get it done.

Seldom in life when things go sideways is a cop, fireman or doctor sitting by to bail you out. While we need those people, 99 times out of 100 we don't have that luxury of being near one at the moment of distress. Self-protection is not having a weapon, a first aid kit or ninja hands, it is a mindset and a philosophy. We believe we can make our world a better place by instilling the notion of personal-responsibility and self reliance into our youth, students and most importantly ourselves. When we lift ourselves up, we are elevated to see above the junk and clutter and can in turn lift up a brother, a friend or a stranger in need.

Mickey Schuch is a pistol combative instructor and former president of McHenry County Right to Carry Association.
