Former Georgia special prosecutor Nathan Wade recently opened up about his past workplace relationship with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, characterizing it as a common occurrence in American workplaces. In his first media appearance since his resignation from the Georgia election interference case against former President Trump, Wade told ABC News' Linsey Davis on "Good Morning America" that such relationships are "as American as apple pie."
During the interview, Wade expressed regret that their relationship had overshadowed the significant legal proceedings. "I regret that this private matter became the focal point of a very important prosecution," he said. This issue came to the forefront after a judge mandated that either Willis or Wade must step down from the case due to the perceived conflict of interest their relationship introduced.
When asked why they didn’t disclose their relationship earlier, Wade explained that he was focused on maintaining the integrity of the ongoing case, emphasizing, "I do not speak for the district attorney’s office, and I believe they would prefer I didn’t partake in this discussion. My goal is to protect the integrity of the prosecution without jeopardizing it in any way."
Wade resigned after it was ruled that the nature of their past relationship, which began in 2022 and ended in the summer of 2023 though they remained friends, created an untenable situation. Meanwhile, despite the controversy, Willis defended her professional integrity, telling CNN, "I don’t feel like my reputation needs to be reclaimed. My greatest crime is having a relationship, which is not something I find embarrassing or illegal."
