since the dawn of time, for centuries

the shadow

year after year and day after day
the past seems to persist in every single way
the years traverse as the memories pervade
this burden of self continues to invade
you can always run, but you can never hide
as the man in the mirror looks you in the eye
we carry ourselves in all that we do
in each step we take and every moment anew
the lingering awareness of this present self
reflecting on the shadow, stalking in stealth
much like a body that we're trying to bury
in addictions and neurosis we continue to carry
this persistent aching that's never changing
until we accept it, there's no rearranging
no more running, you can catch your breath
but your past will chase you, until your death

one generation is lost as another discovers itself
like the breathing in of a new breath
the seasons change like a culture shock
the growth of the new
feeding on the corps of the past

all things will return
back to their source
as the beginning begins to blossom
and this blooming takes it's course
it's the dawning of a cycle
circling back onto itself
all things will begin again
like the serpent eating itself
as the seasons change
the cycle of nature stays the same
the wheel of birth, death and rebirth
a perpetual cycle
condemned onto itself
a constant state of flux
with subtle yet perceptible morph
as all things are restored
back to their source
