The lyrics are taken from the poem "The Old Countryman to His Son", which Ludwig Heinrich Christoph Hölty (1748-1776) published in 1775.
The song is sung to the melody "A girl or female wishes Papageno" from the opera "The Magic Flute", which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) published in 1791.
The performers on this recording are the tenor Franz Baumann (1890-1965) and the Paul Godwin Ensemble. The recording was made in 1927 when the German silent film comedy of the same name was released in cinemas.
From 1797, when Frederick William III took office, the carillon of the Potsdam Garrison Church played "Praise the Lord, the Mighty King of Honour" on the hour and "Always practice loyalty and honesty" on the half hour. The carillon was destroyed in the air raid on Potsdam on the night of April 14th to 15th, 1945. The ruins of the garrison church were blown up in 1968.
