As thousands lined the streets of Malmö city centre to protest the decision to include Israeli singer Eden Golan in the Eurovision song contest, James O'Brien and Nick Ferrari hear from callers expressing their views.

Israel was permitted to compete this year after agreeing to change the lyrics of its entry, which was widely understood to include a reference to the Hamas massacre on October 7th, 2023.

Among those protesting Israel's inclusion was Greta Thunberg. “It is outrageous that Israel is allowed to participate”, she stressed. “We cannot remain silent during a genocide.”

01:08 - Caller Peter tells Nick Ferrari that protesters should be demonstrating 'against Iran, instead of Israel'.

03:10 - Caller Martin says to James O'Brien that banning the protests would essentially translate as 'saying we think Israel is wrong'.

06:41 - Caller Zac - 'Gazan people have been living in an open prison for 75 years so they have every right to stand up and fight back.'

08:04 - Caller Bella tells Nick that Israel are 'essentially committing war crimes', adding they 'should be held to the same standard as Russia'.

09:48 - Referencing George Galloway's recent comments, caller Paul says that he’s 'proven that there are a lot of people on the Palestinian side who are homophobic'.

Donald Trump's position on Nato and world security is "often misunderstood", shadow foreign secretary David Lammy has claimed.

It comes as the Labour shadow foreign secretary, Mr Lammy, said his party would work with Mr Trump, should they both get elected in their respective general elections.

LBC's Natasha Devon questions whether this is possible or even correct, or is it just a 'compromise of integrity'.

"I'm not sure they should have banned the Israeli entry, but I aIso think performing could do untold damage to their 'cause'... riddle me that."

James O'Brien ruminates as protest engulfs the Eurovision song contest. Israel's contestant Eden Golan was ordered to stay in her hotel room by her country's national security agency today as thousands protested her entry into the competition.

Protesters lined the streets in Malmo to demand that Ms Golan be removed from the renowned song competition, including climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Ms Thunberg, 21, joined a 'Stop Israel' demonstration in the centre of the city on Thursday, with protesters calling for an 'end to genocide'.

The demonstration came before Ms Golan's performance at the second semi-final of the competition this evening, which was met with cheers from the crowd after boos during her rehearsal.

It has since been confirmed that Ms Golan has reached the final.

The 20-year-old singer took to the stage on Thursday for the ballad Hurricane, which was reworked from a previous track called October Rain, believed to reference the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel last year.

The song contest's host broadcaster said earlier today that it wouldn't censor the audience reaction.

Meanwhile, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu wished her luck, saying the 20-year-old representative was competing against an "ugly wave of anti-Semitism".

Campaigner lists what made her feel 'uncomfortable to be Jewish' while at university. #lbc #news #nickferrari

According to a recent YouGov poll, Labour are now 30 points ahead of the Tories and enjoying its widest lead since Liz Truss was Prime Minister.

The survey, conducted by The Times, suggests that if a general election were held now, the Tories would only retain 13 seats, while Labour would secure a massive majority of 452 seats.

It means support for the Conservatives is at an all time low since Rishi Sunak assumed office.

However, James O'Brien isn't convinced.

'There is no earthly way the Tories are only to get 13 seats,' he says.

'I'd bet my house on them not getting fewer than 100.'

Tory MP Steve Baker admits to Iain Dale that his party is in ‘quite a lot of trouble’ following Natalie Elphicke’s ‘laughable’ defection to Labour. #lbc #shorts #labour #conservatives #ukpolitics #uknews

Speaking to Shelagh Fogarty, Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, gives his reaction to Natalie Elphicke defecting to Labour.

Elphicke said the Tories 'have become a byword for incompetence and division' and accused Rishi Sunak of 'broken promises' and scrapping key pledges.

The MP for Dover stressed the key factors for her decision were housing and border security.

It's the second defection to Labour for Rishi Sunak in less than two weeks, after Dan Poulter also quit the party.

Natalie Elphicke, considered by most to be on the right of even the Conservative Party, has joined Labour. This has caused consternation across the Commons, with Steve Baker describing the sudden shift in Ms Elphicke's political outlook 'implausible'.

The Cross Question panel from left to right:
Dan Hodges, Mail on Sunday columnist.
Bridget Phillipson, Labour's Shadow Education Secretary.
Iain Dale, LBC host.
Steve Baker, Northern Ireland minister.
Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, cross-bench peer.

Ms Elphicke crossed the floor in the Commons just moments before Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday.

She said: "I have carefully considered this decision. The change has been dramatic and cannot be ignored.

"For me key deciding factors have been housing and the safety and security of our borders."

Her defection to Labour leaves the Government with a working majority in the Commons of 45.

It is the latest blow for the Conservatives - who lost Dan Poulter MP to Labour last month over concerns for the NHS.

Following her announcement, Sir Keir Starmer "warmly welcomed" the Dover MP to the benches.

He added: "If one week a Tory MP who is also a doctor says the Prime Minister can't be trusted with the NHS and joins Labour, and the next week the Tory MP for Dover on the front line of the small boats crisis says the Prime Minister cannot be trusted with our borders, and joins Labour.

"What is the point of this failed Government staggering on?"

John McDonnell has said he is "shocked" by Natalie Elphicke defecting to Labour from the Conservatives because of previous comments she made that have "nothing to do with Labour values."

The former Shadow Chancellor also said that Ms Elphicke being able to join Labour meant that Sir Keir Starmer should restore the whip to Diane Abbott and Mr Corbyn.

He added: "The Labour Party is a membership party, and always will be no matter who is the leader. But the two examples of Diane and Jeremy, there is no argument now that they should have the whip withdrawn. That should be done instantly, I believe, because if you look at Jeremy and Diane's record, they've been standing up for socialist principles.

"They've devoted their life to the Labour Party. And that means I think they deserve to have the whip restored. And in the context of welcoming Natalie Elphicke, what does that say about judgement that has taken place at the moment?"

He said that restoring the whip to Ms Abbott and Mr Corbyn would "rebalance things" in the minds of voters, who might be dismayed by Ms Elphicke joining the party.

Andrew Marr also revealed that a Labour spokesman failed to definitively rule out the possibility of Nigel Farage joining the party.

Natalie Elphicke, the Conservative MP for Dover and Deal, has defected to the Labour Party, hitting out at the "broken promises of Rishi Sunak's tired and chaotic government".

She said: "I have carefully considered this decision. The change has been dramatic and cannot be ignored.

This big policy shift comes in the wake of consistent warnings for Israel not to invade Rafah. It's said Joe Biden feared the impending shipment of weapons would have been used in an invasion of the region.
