This study is quoted by a few aluminum bat rolling enthusiasts who claim the study proves rolling alloy bats work. Unfortunately, this is not the case; the only scientific study out there was done with a double-walled aluminum bat. The increase in distance with a double-walled alloy bat is a result of the thin layer of foam bat companies put in between the double barrels. This foam could be broken up by bat rolling and yield distance and exit velocity gains. Today’s alloy bats are single walls, and some have restrictor rings in the middle of the barrel. Bat rolling, heated bat rolling, or a natural break-in does not help these single wall bats with exit velocity as some would have you believe.
