According to figures released by the Turkish Statistical Institute, in 2023 alone, tourism accounted for an income of $54.3 billion and the same year. Turkey is 22nd largest military spender in 2023 with $16 billion. Turkey allocated more than $40 billion to its defense budget in 2024, marking a 150% increase from 2023's budget.

The country also expects the $23 billion F-16 fighter jet procurement from the US to be finalized, after approving Sweden's NATO accession on Jan. 24.

To put it bluntly: the more tourists enjoy Turkey’s beaches, the more Christians and Kurds will die.

Georgia’s prime minister on Thursday said an EU commissioner had hinted he could face an assassination bid over a controversial law but the official said the conversation had been distorted.

Georgian premier Irakli Kobakhidze said the unnamed commissioner told him to be “very careful,” citing this month’s assassination attempt on Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico, while discussing the legislation likened by critics to Russian-style laws.

Olivér Várhelyi says his words about Slovakian PM Robert Fico were taken out of context, after the Georgian Dream leader claimed it was part of a sinister conspiracy.

The EU’s enlargement chief has accused Georgia’s prime minister of distorting his words, after the PM accused him of intimidation in an explosive outburst.

Tensions are running high between the EU and Georgia, as the country tries to push through a Russia-style law which would classify some EU-funded NGOs and media outlets as “foreign agents.”

In a statement posted on Facebook Thursday, Irakli Kobakhidze claimed that his increasingly authoritarian government is facing “abusive blackmail” from the West, and said a senior EU official had hinted he could face the same fate as Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was shot four times earlier this month.

“The threat aired during a phone call with a European Commissioner was astonishing,” he wrote. “In my conversation, the European Commissioner listed a number of measures Western politicians can take after [Georgia passes] the transparency law and, while listing these measures, [the Commissioner] said ‘look what happened to Fico, you should be very careful.'”

In a statement published later Thursday night, Neighborhood and Enlargement Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi said his words had been “not just fully taken out of context but was also presented to the public in a way which could give rise to a complete misinterpretation of the originally intended aim of my phone call.”

More than 160 earthquakes were recorded on Monday evening and overnight.
The strongest, of magnitude 4.4, happened around 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT) near the town of Pozzuoli. Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) said it was the strongest quake in the region for 40 years.
Gaetano Manfredi, the mayor of Naples, acknowledged that residents may be scared - but said officials were "paying attention".

Hundreds of tents were erected in Pozzuoli and some residents stayed on the streets for much of the night, though others opted to stay elsewhere with relatives.

Local media reported that several families were considering leaving the area altogether due to the number of low-level quakes that have occurred in the last few months.

One outlet quoted a Naples resident as saying they had never felt such a strong quake.

"This time it was rough, it felt like it would never end," a man told Il Mattino newspaper.

While no significant damage to structures has been reported, some schools in Naples remained shut on Tuesday for inspections - and a women’s prison in Pozzuoli was evacuated as a precaution.

Mr Manfredi warned "there could be more serious quakes" in the future and said officials needed to "manage this emergency situation with which we might have to live for months".

"I can't tell people not to be scared, because that's normal, but I can tell Neapolitans that we are paying attention and monitoring [the situation]," he continued in a statement.

"Never before has this territory been more closely watched, so let's try and live as normally as we can."

Pozzuoli sits near the Campi Flegrei (Phlegraean Fields), a large volcanic caldera - a sort-of sinkhole - left after an eruption that is thought to have occurred tens of thousands of years ago.

The plain, which is home to more than 800,000 people, has in the last year seen an increase in seismic activity and bradyseism - a process that leads to a change in the height of the surface of the land, causing said quakes that Campi Flegrei residents have experienced.

The INGV has previously said that an eruption of the Campi Flegrei would require a large accumulation of magma below the land surface and, as a result, volcanologists would be able to spot the signs well in advance.

The Italian government recently updated its mass evacuation plan for the so-called "red area", which would be most exposed to the consequences of an eruption there.

The liturgical chants of the Church of Ethiopia which are of a very particular kind, come under the name 'aqwaqwam'' and bring together religious hymns with the accompaniment of castanets, drums and dance. This "music and dance heaven" was revealed to Saint Yared (sixth century) in a vision in paradise and has not changed since then because of the isolation of Ethiopia to the rest of the Christian world. It therefore reflects ancient Christian rites. These recordings were collected at religious festivals and ceremonies in churches of Addis Ababa.

👹 French police shot dead a knife-wielding Algerian man who set fire to a synagogue and threatened police in the city of Rouen on Friday in the latest antisemitic attack, officials said.

⚡ A community in eastern Ethiopia buried twelve lightning survivors up to their necks and also poured milk on them to fulfill a local ritual. Per BBC, the lightning on Sunday happened in the town of Melka Bello.

“It was not heavy rain as such,” one of the survivors, Nesro Abdi, said. “The lightning struck a sheep at the door while we were inside a house. All of us fell down. Many of us were shaking.”

The survivors were ultimately helped by other locals after they heard screams. “They brought milk and poured it on us. They dug up the ground and buried our bodies below our necks,” Nesro said.
