Move Over Corn Pop — Biden's Remarks on Uncle Eaten by Cannibals in New Guinea
During a campaign event in Pittsburgh, Joe Biden sparked controversy by suggesting that his uncle, 2nd Lt Ambrose J Finnegan Jr, may have been eaten by cannibals in Papua New Guinea during World War II. Biden recounted his uncle's service, stating that he flew reconnaissance flights in single-engine planes and was shot down in New Guinea, adding that "they never found the body because there used to be a lot of cannibals, for real, in that part of New Guinea."
Official war records contradict Biden's claims, stating that Finnegan died when the plane he was a passenger on experienced engine failure and crashed into the Pacific Ocean, with no mention of cannibalism or the plane being shot down.
Analysts in Papua New Guinea criticized Biden's remarks as unsubstantiated and offensive, particularly at a time when the US seeks to strengthen ties with the country. Michael Kabuni, a political science lecturer at the University of Papua New Guinea, highlighted the offensive nature of Biden's categorization, stating that cannibalism was practiced in specific cultural contexts and not simply as a means of sustenance.
Governor Allan Bird of East Sepik province expressed bemusement at Biden's remarks, suggesting they may stem from childhood anecdotes. However, Maholopa Laveil, an economics lecturer at the University of Papua New Guinea, deemed the claims unhelpful and damaging to the country's image, especially in light of recent negative press.
According to the Pentagon’s Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, Biden’s uncle died on 14 May 1944, when the plane he was on crashed into the ocean off the north coast of New Guinea due to engine failure. Three crew members were lost in the crash, with one survivor rescued by a passing barge.
