There's an almost universal claim that Israel's retaliatory response to the attack on October 7th must be proportionate. Is that true? When did morality become a numbers game? How SHOULD Israel respond? In this video, Mark Pellegrino explores the moral response to violence and why there can only be one goal.

00:00 Should Israel's response be proportionate?

When you start a war with someone, you’ve declared to the world that persuasion, reason,
civility, and rights, can no longer settle your differences… that means you have essentially
forfeited the defining characteristics of civilization for violence. That’s a hard truth for a college
kid wrapped in privilege, figuring out where his intersection on the oppression hierarchy is while
sipping his double mocha frap at Starbucks to grasp… 'why can’t war be friendly?' he says to no
one in particular as he wraps himself in the Palestinian flag to chant ‘from the river to the sea,
Palestine will be free.’

What is THE question at the base of the conflict in Israel? Mark Pellegrino discusses the principle of legitimate statehood and why this means Israel is the only state in the Middle East entitled to defend itself.

00:00 What gives Israel the Right?
00:13 A brief history of Israel since 1948
01:05 Almost everyone fails to use principles
01:17 The principle of legitimate statehood
01:35 What is the definition of a state?
02:06 What makes a state legitimate?
02:22 The history of Israel, Gaza and the West Bank
02:55 The Enlightenment redefined legitimacy
03:39 Rights determine legitimacy
03:55 How does Israel compare to Gaza and the West Bank?
04:56 The rejection of every western moral norm
05:22 Israel is the only legitimate state in the Middle East
05:48 To the Palestinian people

From The Enlightenment on, any state that did not abide by the social moral principle of rights — which constrained the power of the state so that men could be free to act in their own interests — was not legitimate. The logic being that no state could claim a ‘right’ to exist that did not also respect the rights of its own citizens. That means that in the present, Rights determine legitimacy. And so it follows that the legitimacy of a state should be measured by the degree to which it fulfils this moral ideal.

What's the fundamental condition for peaceful coexistence and thriving? Which country in the Middle East deserves your support? Mark Pellegrino looks to philosophical principles to determine whose position in the war in Israel is just.

00:00 Should you stand with Israel?
00:25 Liberty is the fuel that makes human industry and productivity possible
00:42 What is the path to peace in the Middle East?
01:06 Israel vs Hamas today is a war for tolerance and human progress
01:20 Tribalism and the Hamas attack on Israel
01:33 Is the war in Israel just?

Stand with the only democratic state in the Middle East. Have the courage to stand against the rising tide of tribal hatred and intolerance and fight for the gift of liberty. Nothing less than your future depends on it.

The Social Contract is an implicit agreement between everyone in a given society. Even babies. If that isn’t bad enough, it’s based on the conclusion that a society governed by law requires the sacrifice of its individual members' rights to remain secure.

Ever noticed how many concepts have been corrupted by common usage away from meanings intended to promote liberal values to meanings intended to promote illiberal values? What kind of power do billionaires like Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk have? And what kind of power do politicians like Donald Trump, Joe Biden and Justin Trudeau have? Do you see the difference? In this video, Mark Pellegrino explains the difference between the power to persuade (economic power) and the power to compel (political power).

00:00 The Problem of Power
00:22 There are two types of power
00:39 The power to persuade
01:25 Economic power
01:42 The power to compel
02:08 Political power
03:00 Mixed economies

'No matter how badly Steve Jobs wanted to turn you against Microsoft, he couldn’t raid your house in the middle of the night, kidnap you, and hold you in confinement till you changed your mind. He can only persuade you by creating something that sways your preferences away from his competitor. Not so the politician who could pass a law against you that favors his constituency and handicaps yours or, if his political world lacks even the semblance of Republican checks and balances, kill or imprison you for the simple fact that you are the competition and he doesn’t like that.'

What are political parties? What's the difference between the political parties in the two-party system? How much choice do we actually have? In this video, Mark Pellegrino talks about two ways of morally organizing society — collectivist and individualist — and how both the democrats and the republicans are essentially different takes on the same collectivist ideal.

0:00 The illusion of the two-party system
0:32 History of the two-party system
0:50 The collectivistic perspective
1:29 The individualistic perspective
2:00 What are political parties?
2:29 There is no middle ground
2:50 The illusion of choice
3:05 We can't live in a permanent state of compromise

'As no individual can live with two opposing moral codes guiding his behavior, no society can
either… and as no individual can compromise between two fundamentally opposing moral
codes without the bad one winning, no society can either. That’s why at various times in our own history, one party or moral organization was dominant for long stretches, and why the two parties today don’t seem all that far apart on fundamentals.'

Do you want freedom or liberty? What's the difference? In this video, Mark Pellegrino explains that you can only be liberated from another person because only people can use force when they don’t have to. You can't be liberated from natural constraints like gravity.

0:24 Liberty is freedom from… what?
0:48 Freedom means 'without constraints'
1:38 The desire to be free from the world as it is — Kant, Rousseau, Plato, Marx, Jesus
2:10 'Life in the state of nature is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.' — Thomas Hobbs
2:22 You can only be 'liberated' from another moral agent
2:42 Moral agents choose the constraint of liberty
3:06 Liberty is freedom from people

'The natural constraints of reality and life cannot be pretended out of existence. At best, the burden of complying with these unalterable realities can be shifted temporarily to another.'
