Today we will dive into the history of Nemacolin’s Trail, the first documented trail that traversed through the Allegheny Mountains, revealed to European Settlers by Nemacolin in the years 1749 and 1750. Nemacolin was a Chief of the Delaware People.

Furthermore, the path through the mountains was eventually used by the British in 1755, who claimed to have rebuilt and reinforced it, leading to the trail being known as Braddock’s Military Road. However, Braddock’s Road steered clear of one location; The Redstone Mound.

At one terminus of the once legendary Nemacolin’s Trail was an ancient and sacred mound built by the Mound Builders, eventually housing Fort Burd, and now home to the 1789 Nemacolin Castle, built entirely of Red Sandstone, which was said to be found atop the mound, and was used to construct much of the architecture in the surrounding area.
