King Bhagiratha of the Suryavamsha dynasty sought to bring the celestial river Ganga down to Earth. He did so with the purpose of purifying the ashes of his ancestors and providing salvation to them. To accomplish this task, King Bhagiratha engaged in severe penance and austerities for a long time to please Lord Brahma.

Pleased with Bhagiratha's devotion, Lord Brahma granted him a boon. Bhagiratha requested that Ganga descend to Earth, but he also realized that the force of Ganga's descent would be so powerful that it might devastate the Earth. To prevent this, he asked for another boon – that Lord Shiva should receive Ganga on His head and calm Her force with His matted locks.

Lord Brahma granted Bhagiratha's request, and river Ganga began Her descent from the heavens. However, the divine Ganga descended with immense force and threatened to engulf the Earth. To control this powerful flow, Lord Shiva, understanding Bhagiratha's purpose, agreed to bear the weight of Ganga on His head.

As Ganga flowed down, She landed on Lord Shiva's matted locks, which channeled the river's force. Lord Shiva then released Ganga in a controlled flow, allowing Her to stream gently through His locks and onto the Earth. This form of Lord Shiva bearing the celestial river is known as Bhagavan Gangadhara Murthy.
