To those not familiar with ancient sacrificial rights or the origin of your own religions you may be confused, but it's quite a simple reference. The ancient thoughts on this were that because birds fly, some broad parts of the changes going on in heaven would be picked up by the bird, who's domain is heaven. To dismember a red bird, and find the intestines to be healthy, not occluded with tumors or malformation, means total victory over your opponents in war.
