Stoicism, Dichotomy of Control, and Locus of Control

Stoicism is an ancient Greek school of philosophy founded at Athens by Zeno of Citium. The school taught that virtue, the highest good, is based on knowledge; the wise live in harmony with the divine Reason (also identified with Fate and Providence) that governs nature, and are indifferent to the vicissitudes of fortune and to pleasure and pain.

These were known as 'Cardinal Virtues', that its leaders believed could lead to a better, happier and more fulfilling life. The four virtues of Stoicism were: wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice.

The Dichotomy of Control is a Stoic practice that basically states some things are within our control and others are not.

Locus of Control is the degree to which people believe that they, as opposed to external forces (beyond their influence), have control over the outcome of events in their lives. The concept was developed by Julian B. Rotter in 1954, and has since become an aspect of personality psychology.

External Locus of Control refers to the belief that external factors, such as fate, luck, or other people, are responsible for the outcomes.
