California often sparks images of stardom and fame…or earthquakes…or maybe the Gold Rush. Whatever your impression, it certainly has some Wyrd history.
In the late 1930s, residents of Bennington and surrounding areas reported seeing a large, hairy, ape-like creature roaming the countryside.
Strange humanoid figures were reported walking across the Mojave Desert, seen from highways at night by many different travelers over decades. The figures supposedly moved inhumanly fast and disappeared into the darkness. Some think they were otherworldly beings or interdimensional travelers.
Unexplained flickering lights and orbs have been seen drifting across the mountains near San Bernardino for centuries. The "Brown Mountain Lights" seem to defy scientific explanation and have spawned theories involving UFOs, ghosts, atmospheric phenomena, and more.
The grisly, unsolved murder and mutilation of 22-year-old Elizabeth Short in Los Angeles has become one of the most famous unsolved crimes in California history. Her bisected body was dumped in a vacant lot, spawning endless speculation about her killer's identity.
Security guards at the Empress Theatre in Vallejo have reported seeing the ghost of a woman in a white dress wandering the halls at night making ghostly knocking sounds. She is believed to be the spirit of a former actress who died there.
