British couple with Indian jab taken off flight to Malta
Britons vaccinated with an Indian-made version of the AstraZeneca vaccine are being prevented from flying to parts of Europe because the jab is not licenced in the EU.
Steve and Glenda Hardy, 64 and 63, from Hull, were turned back at Manchester airport on Friday when they tried to board a flight to Malta, where they were to visit their son who they had not seen for over a year.
The retired couple, who received Indian-manufactured doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine in March, were stopped as they passed through the boarding check by staff working for the travel business Tui.
The batch numbers on their NHS apps were checked and the couple were told they could not board the flight because the Malise authorities did not recognise the vaccine.

Woman’s ‘veins burst and she ended up in a wheelchair after rare reaction to Covid vaccine’
Courtney Keating said she was forced to use a wheelchair for a month after the extreme reaction.
The young woman, from London, claims she was in hospital for four weeks and left unable to walk after her nerves and joints were affected.
She posted on Facebook about her experience, saying medics told her if she hadn't come into hospital when she did it may have been fatal.
Courtney claimed the vaccination caused bleeding under her skin, as she shared photos of her legs covered in purple marks on Tuesday.
Courtney wrote: “I would just like to spread awareness about a bad reaction I had to the Covid vaccine.
“These pictures are what happened to my legs and also my arms and back after the vaccine.
“My veins and blood cells had burst and were bleeding under the skin.
“I was unable to walk for over a month where it had attacked the nerves and joints in my legs.
“I was in a wheelchair for over a month and I was then learning to start to walk again with a frame."

On May 25, 2021 Freddy suffered an immediate and severe reaction to his Moderna COVID vaccination. Within the 15 minute waiting period the left side of his body was paralyzed, he went cold, and his breathing became extremely shallow. He had swelling in his feet and a rash throughout his body. Freddy was treated immediately on site by paramedics.
The following night he experienced dizziness and heart palpitations, collapsed in his home and stopped breathing. Freddy's heart went into major atrial fibrillation and he was transported back to the hospital where a loop recorder was implanted into his chest to monitor his heart. Since then he has had six seizures and/or strokes (to be determined), experiences constant uncontrollable spasms and tremors, migraines, tinnitus, fatigue, dizziness, brain fog, and overall body pain.
