Took a little off the top with the angle grinder. I use the tapered reamer to open up the hole to size after hole sawing

The inner and outer fireboxes are mocked up with screws. From this I can determine the water gauge bush positions. The regulator body will pass right over the firebox inner and proceed down the boiler barrel as on the Quarry Hunslet

Building my 1/12th scale PQR Charles loco has progressed to the boiler stage. I'm using 1/16" copper sheet, and 1/16" wall section copper tube for the boiler barrel. It took a long time to finalise dimensions, poring over photographs and trying to get the basic proportions. The firebox is very similar to the Quarry Hunslet's, but a little longer, and this time - all wet

The cleaning power of Citric Acid (available in the supermarket baking section). My 2016 brew still has plenty of strength, this pail was set-up for the Quarry Hunslet

The firehole ring has been fitted to the firebox inner and outer

Transferring the cutout from the inner firebox to the backhead

Careful filing of the inner firebox rear plate enabled the firehole ring to fit to the turned shoulder

Backhead 1. After making the steel flanging former and cutting out the copper blank for the backhead it was time to scribe the curved line with the dividers

Backhead 3. With the backhead soft again after annealing the flanging was tidied up

The 1/16" Copper throatplate needs a 2 1/2" hole in it to accept the boiler barrel

I tried a test cut with the 2 3/8" hole saw but it was too much for my bench drill

Backhead 2. The backhead sheet was cut and filed to shape, then annealed and then flanged over the former until it became work hardened enough for re-annealing

The throat plate flanging will be formed using the backhead former

My first steam whistle 💨

Steam-up on the 22nd, before the hot summer sun was on the line 😎
