Friedrich List - National System of Political Economy (Myth20c - Ep278)

Economics today is an institutionalized profession, with academic departments, research grants, and millions of practitioners in the finance and government sectors. In the late 18th and early 19th century, however, economists were not part of any formalized profession, and ranged in background from professors of logic and moral philosophy in the case of Adam Smith to dilettantish journalists with wealthy patrons in the case of Karl Marx. Friedrich List, a former German bureaucrat and eventual entrepreneur emigre to America, saw firsthand the important interplay between government and industry, particularly around protective tariffs for developing a manufacturing sector - serving as a potential “missing link” in the body of thought between the extremes of radical laissez faire free markets and top down centrally planned economies. As the world continues on a path towards de-globalization and increasing polarization, List’s system of National Economics provides a guidebook to many developing and developed economies alike that seek to increase their level of independence and sovereignty.

Russia at War - Command Economy (Myth20c - Ep277)

Vladimir Putin recently won reelection as Russia’s president by a wide margin, making him the country’s longest serving ruler since Josef Stalin. Both men have also uniquely presided over their country’s largest-scale conflicts, throwing support to the argument that economic sanctions placed on countries during war only serve to entrench rather than dislodge their leaders. But the long-term sustainability of a war-style command economy remains less clear, with notable examples of North Korea and arguably the Soviet Union itself raising real concerns of how people can fall behind over time without a relaxing of the central authority. Tonight, we are rejoined by Lance, our frequent military expert and contributor to help us unravel some of the mystery of the military and economic machinations of the Putin regime and how it compares to other stratagems in America and around the world.

The largest country in Latin America - in terms of population, land mass, and economy - is a crown worn indisputably by Brazil. But the history of this land, spanning four timezones and over five centuries of development, is one marked by tumultuous governance and political conflict, with different crowns worn by monarchs, military dictators, and democratic politicians alike, ruling over a teeming population of millions of former slaves, colonists and wannabe conquistadors. Argentina - Chainsaw Economics (Myth20c - Ep264)

The Boniface Option (Myth20c - Ep262)

In pagan Germany sometime in the 8th century, legend has it that a Christian monk, who would later become known as Saint Boniface, gathered a tribe of non-believers around him and their most sacred tree. Thought to incite a vengeful bolt of lightning from Thor himself if cut down, Boniface, in front of all who could see, felled the tree with a single chop of the axe, aided by a gust of wind seemingly from another divinity, and no lightning. In that moment, the onlookers were converted to Christianity. Tonight, we are joined by the author of ‘The Boniface Option’, Pastor Andrew, to explore why the analogy of a bold and visceral attack against false idols may be fitting for addressing the troubles of our “trashworld” times.

The World on the Brink - After Dark (Myth20c - Ep261)

The world has never lacked for a troubling incident or cause for concern. But there are times when the drumbeats reach a crescendo, and in the case of war, the potential for large scale conflict seems to rise when a hegemon begins declining, and rival powers see their opportunity to increase their share. Ray Dalio, having made his success running the world’s largest global macro hedge fund and authoring several books on the major forces shaping world history, recently raised his estimate on the chance of World War III occurring in the next two years from 35% to 50%. Given how high the stakes are in that outcome, those are not the most encouraging odds. Tonight, we are joined by returning guest Lance to discuss the recent conflicts in the Middle and Near East, as well as the potential for such in the Far East and the general escalation amongst the nuclear armed superpowers.

Mining - From the Depths of the Earth - After Dark (Myth20c - Ep260)

Even before humans developed metal tools, stonework, jewelry and mineral wealth have been an integral part in human society. With the advent of the industrial revolution, with coal being exploited as a primary energy source for heating and locomotion, even more minerals ranging from copper to iron to aluminum became accessible on a scale never before seen. Now, with fossil fuels such as coal and oil becoming more difficult to source and pressure from environmental concerns causing a search for greener energy, a new frontier in mining for the green economy, ranging from lithium to cobalt, has opened, raising new challenges and opportunities in the never ending search for wealth from beneath.

Estimates place the amount of the earth’s land area dedicated to buildings and other fixed structures to be no more than 3%. But of that land, nearly half is exclusive to roads and parking structures in some urban areas. This fact, obviously a consequence of the prevalence of the automobile, illustrates the importance of transportation, a key pillar to modern civilization. Connecting people, goods and services has always been important, but as the cost of movement has dropped and the speed has increased, the value of the network has only grown, which Metcalfe defined as proportional to the square of the nodes, or in this case, destinations. As technology pushes us farther and more safely, the era of globalization may very well extend beyond the globe and into the stars.

Australia - a History of Settlement (Myth20c - Ep257)

Australia, a name derived from the Latin for “southern land”, sits as a continent unto itself at the far reaches of the Asian landmass, receiving its first settlers over 50,000 years ago when the ice age connected the two by a land bridge. It was not until the European settlements in the 17th century did Australia have a written record, and also when it started receiving its largest growth in population. When Australia became united as a federated commonwealth in 1901, one of the first acts it passed was the White Australia Policy, favoring European settlement and limitation of the recent Asian, particularly Chinese, immigration and influence. Only until the 1970s did this policy shift towards broader and more open immigration. Tonight, Matthew Grant from the Australian Natives Association joins us to discuss why this shift occurred, and perhaps why a return to the older policies might be beneficial to the people of his country.

In a time of increasing skepticism of globalization, stemming from losses in jobs, cultural heritage, and sovereignty over ones own homeland, nationalism has re-emerged onto the political stage in protest movements and increasingly populist governments. Christian nationalism, focused on the incorporation of church doctrine into a nation and often a sovereign, is not a new concept, stemming at least from the time of the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, but recently has re-emerged as a potential solution to the social ills many societies face in the West. Saudi Arabia and the (End of the) Petrodollar (Myth20c - Ep255)

In 1945 near the end of WWII, US President Franklin Roosevelt, on his way back from the Yalta summit, met on the cruiser USS Quincy in the Suez Canal with Kign Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia. The meeting, prompted by Roosevelt asking how the United States had outlasted the mighty German war machine, was motivated by the fact that American oil resources fueled the enormous military buildout that went on to eclipse not only the production of Germany but also the output of all other Axis countries combined. Thinking ahead to declining American reserves, Roosevelt correctly saw and successful negotiated an alliance between the US and the kingdom that until recently has undergirded not only the industrial world’s need for energy but also America’s need for further legitimization of the US dollar in an era of large budget and trade deficits which came in the form of the ‘petrodollar.’ Growing from a population of fewer than 5 million in 1960 to over 33 million today, the home to Mecca, the birthplace of Mohammed and Islam and the center of the broader Muslim world, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has had mixed success in transitioning from its ancient heritage to the fabulous wealth provided by oil. It’s state oil giant - Saudi Aramco - is the world’s third largest company as measured by market capitalization, at $2 trillion, but looking ahead, with increased calls for a move away from fossil fuels and the rise of China, the kingdom looks to invest in the future while retaining its past, and hopes to maintain its central role, for good or for worse, in Middle Eastern culture and politics.

BANKING CRISIS - After Dark (Myth20c - Ep250)

The English word ‘bank’ meaning a depository and lending institution, derives from the Italian word ‘banca’, or ‘bench.’ This belies the origins of modern finance in Renaissance Italy, where deals initially struck at coffee house benches evolved into the great trading and banking houses of the Medicis, where double-entry book keeping enabled the matching of debtors with creditors that spurred the growth of industrial Europe over the coming centuries. Today, with daily capital flows measured in the trillions of dollars enabled by high-speed fiber optics and a global communications network, major decisions happen much more quickly, and because of the levered nature of fractional reserve finance, regional concern can magnify into global contagion faster than an actual pandemic. In the case of last weekend, where Silicon Valley Bank, one of the top-30 global banks went into receivership, the political institutions of the United States were caught off guard, and in an attempt to quell further concerns, went into overdrive this week as the Federal Reserve discount window was opened guaranteeing the assets of all major banks. Not to be outdone, the Swiss National Bank just intervened in the takeover of Credit Suisse, a century and half years old institution, to further halt panic in European markets. Memories of the 2008 financial crisis are on everyone’s mind, and the ripple effects of these events are surely to continue throughout the year.

The Changing World Order - Why Nations Succeed and Fail (Myth20c - Ep249)

Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, has written several books on the world of investing and the economy in general based on his years of experience as manager of the world’s largest hedge fund. In the latest of his ‘Principles’ series, Dalio applies his quantitative approach of macro investing to analyzing countries, seeking to identify the factors that lead to strength such as education and work ethic, as well as lagging indicators such as a reserve currency that allow a country to spend beyond its means but ultimately presage a fall from dominance. Notably, Dalio sees China’s rise to the top of global power as likely, with America, while ahead, slowly declining. Tonight we debate the merits of his analysis, as well as the overall validity of a global macroeconomic approach that overlooks key factors such as demographics in forecasting long term power status.

The exchange of goods and services has existed since the earliest forms of civilization, from simple barter arrangements at the local town square to Phoenician traders navigating the Mediterranean with goods from Europe and North Africa. Today, however, the scope of exchange is truly massive, with online commerce coming to dominate nearly all segments of retail, and the scale encompassing transoceanic trade routes totaling 11 billion tons in maritime cargoes in 2021. Underpinning all this lies an extremely complex web of producers, shippers, pipelines, warehouses, and commodities traders that include the massive concerns such as Koch Industries in energy and Glencore in metals, with over 100,000 employees each. Billions of dollars have been made and lost in commodities futures, and as volatility continues to disrupt prices of everyday items from gasoline to grain, the trend of ever tighter global trade integration seen since the end of the Cold War may start to unravel as regional blocks choose to have closer and more reliable supply chains.
