Easter Perspectives: Agnostic Ex-Christian vs Catholic

I woke up this Easter Sunday with some poignant thoughts about how uneventful Easter has been for me throughout my life, now as an Agnostic ex-Christian but even back when I actually was a Christian.

My friend Dave (a devout Catholic) texted me what I was doing for Easter and I was of course like, uhh... nothing? Long story short, he ended up coming over and we recorded our conversation / debate about Easter in this experimental format... where we each had about a minute to go back and forth sharing our views on Easter, religion, etc.

Feelings (Thinking Out Loud #17)

“Feelings” are only real in the sense
that they feel real *to you* (which, is fine)...
but that is not “evidence”
that something is objectively true for all.

We should all be a little more aware of our biases
and the subjectivity of our views...
as we each seek a more honest and genuine understanding
of what is actually true.

Omniscient and Omnipotent? (Thinking Out Loud #16)

If God is omniscient and omnipotent,
he sees every atrocity committed
and though having the power to stop it,
he chooses not to.

Christians may argue that he doesn’t interfere
because he gives us free will,
but that doesn’t actually make sense.

If you love your child,
as a parent would you stand idly by
while your child either commits a violent act
or is a victim of one?
NO.
If you love your child, you would intervene.

You would do everything in your (limited) power
to protect the ones you love.
That doesn’t mean you’d lock them in the house to “protect” them.

No, you’d let them run free and live their own lives...
thus giving them “free will”,
but you wouldn’t knowingly allow your children
to be abused, raped, enslaved, etc.

And yet this is how your so-called God operates…
allowing his children to be abused, raped, enslaved
every day, for thousands and thousands of years.

Morality (Thinking Out Loud #2)

Funny how Christians often boast that only THEY are allowed to define morality… simply because they inherited a book written & compiled by men thousands of years ago… and in that book those men wrote that whatever is written in the book is from God.

Literally ANYONE can write & compile a book of laws/decrees
and claim that it is from God,
but 1) that doesn’t make it true
and 2) that is not a valid basis for moral authority.

The Agnostic Life (Thinking Out Loud #4)

The Theist believes there is a God.
The Atheist believes there is no God.
The Agnostic simply says:
“Anything’s possible, but I cannot know for sure.”

Agnostics often get a bad rap… labeled as wishy washy or that their beliefs are a copout.
When in actuality their position is perhaps the most curious, humble, and intellectually honest.

Agnostics are (continually) open to new information and experiences. Consider it a process of elimination, if you will.
They seek to understand the world, and in the process end up ruling out falsehoods while trying to remain open to possibilities.

At the same time, why obsess about things unknown… when there is so much to enjoy in life that we actually DO know?

Live in the moment. No one knows for sure what’ll happen after you die, so why sweat it?
Don’t ruin your known life in fear of some unknown afterlife.

Enjoy life.
Be a decent human being.
Love people. Love animals.
Support the arts.
Make the world a better place.
Be honest in your pursuit of truth.

If after doing that for a lifetime,
some God decides to banish you to Hell,
That would say more about the character of that sadistic God
Than it would about the life you lived.

The One True Religion? (Thinking Out Loud #3)

If there really is ONE true religion, why hasn’t it won out by now?

You’d think if an all-powerful God was on one side, He’d have the ability to squash all the other “false religions”.

Consider this... What would the world look like if there is no God?

Each man-made religion would make claims that theirs is true and all others are false.

Each religion would continue warring until all other “false” religions were eliminated... or until reasonable secular laws were passed that
made it illegal to murder people who believe differently than you.

Thus under the limitations of reasonable laws (not being able to murder everyone who believes in different religions than yours), each religion would continue to clamor that theirs is the one true religion
and all others are false for thousands and thousands of years... which is EXACTLY what we’ve seen happen for thousands and thousands of years.

The Power of Belief (Thinking Out Loud #1)

Beliefs are important in so far as how they shape your reality.

You can believe in something that is historically false or scientifically unproven, but because it feels true to you,
your belief will deeply impact your life.

In this sense, the power of belief is undeniable…

And thus, it is incredibly important what one believes. Not because of what happens after you die (as Christians claim for example in John 3: 16), but because of how it will shape your life here and now.

If you believe you’re going to Heaven after you die, that belief will undoubtedly give you peace of mind throughout the days of your life. That peace of mind will most likely reduce your stress, which may in turn lead to a longer, healthier life…

So you see, even if a belief is untrue… there is still value to an individual in believing it.

It comes down to this…

Are you the sort of person who will pursue truth no matter how harsh it is or detrimental to your psyche? (RED PILL)

or are you the sort of person who would rather stick with self-serving beliefs because they’re working for you? (BLUE PILL)

Neither is “right” or “wrong”…
it’s merely a choice of what kind of person you want to be
and how you want to live your life.

There’s a reason why most people choose the blue pill.

It’s easier, more comfortable, and Darwinistic in a sense…
a survival mechanism that helps finite beings deal with their inevitable deaths.

What a lovely idea…
That death has been conquered…
that you will live forever in eternal bliss in a heavenly realm
with a God that loves you, and also be reunited with your loved ones (assuming they’re not burning in hellfire for eternity in the *other place* because they believed something different than you did). Actually, is this so lovely after all?

Millions of belief systems may not ultimately be true, but…
it's understandable why people choose to believe them.

It actually makes logical sense why people would believe in unbelievable things.

As long as these self-serving beliefs help propagate the species,
people will continue to believe them.

Have you ever stopped to consider just how much religions (Christianity, Islam, etc.) focus on death? Frankly, they're obsessed with it and concepts like "end times" and armageddon.

Why focus on death? Well... it's inevitable that every human being dies, so it can be quite powerful (and profitable!) to prey on humans' fears of dying and give them (false) promises about what happens AFTER death. There is of course ZERO proof for heaven/hell, but 100% proof that we are alive in this very moment.

Don't allow religions to manipulate your fears. Choose life. For all we know, you've only got one... and this is it.

OBVIOUSLY Jesus on the side of the Eagles today. Because you know, Jesus's top priority in a world full of horrors is to make sure that his chosen sports team of the moment wins.

Sorry all you sick, starving children whose prayers will go unanswered while Jesus is manipulating the Super Bowl for one team to win over the other. Priorities.
