In a surprising move, Manhattan prosecutors announced that Michael Cohen will be the final witness in their direct case against former President Donald Trump. This decision deviates from the conventional prosecutorial strategy of beginning and ending with strong witnesses. Democratic District Attorney Alvin Bragg's team began with David Pecker, the former CEO of the National Enquirer, and is concluding with Cohen, both of whom have credibility issues. This unconventional approach might be necessary given that all key witnesses—Pecker, Cohen, and Stormy Daniels—carry significant baggage, leaving prosecutors with no strong candidates to anchor the case.
Each witness's involvement with Trump underscores the case's complexity. Trump allegedly had an affair with Stormy Daniels and paid her $130,000 for her silence, which he continues to deny. Pecker assisted Trump by suppressing damaging stories, further complicating the narrative. Cohen, a disbarred lawyer and convicted felon, has a history of perjury and fraudulent activities. Despite his unsavory past, Cohen's prominence in this case stems from his long-standing relationship with Trump, who relied on Cohen's aggressive tactics for over a decade.
The challenge for Trump's defense team, particularly lead attorney Todd Blanche, is to discredit Cohen's testimony without implicating Trump further. Blanche must persuade the jury that Cohen's word is unreliable. However, excessive attacks on Cohen's character might backfire, prompting jurors to question why Trump employed someone like Cohen for so many years. If the jury concludes that Trump valued Cohen's dishonest behavior, it could undermine Trump's defense.
