Before seeing Tobe Hooper's 'Spontaneous Combustion' was about 80% sure that he directed 'Poltergeist' (1982).

Now I'm not quite so certain.

When a director has done as much work as Hooper (44 productions, a mix feature films and television work) you eventually see certain stylistic consistencies from one project to the next.

Guess what Tobe Hooper film seems to break with that convention?

I enjoy horror revolving around drugs ('Shrooms' from 2007 gets a lot of hate, which is a pity because it's pretty good) so I was looking forward to the 'Trim Season' trailer.

The movie appears to revolve around a bunch of stoners who choose to spend a time harvesting a marijuana crop, which doesn't go quite as they imagined it would.

I expected a 'Reefer Madness' adjacent take – which is interesting in and of itself though a bit tiring because it's fairly obvious – though that's not the route the trailer takes.

'Graveyard Shark' reminds me of titles like 'Avalanche Shark' or 'Ouija Shark,' which is to say on the face of it doesn't make a lick of sense.

Though having seen the trailer for 'Graveyard Shark,' it still doesn't make a lot of sense – why couldn't it take place in somewhere like Martha's Vineyard, which passed for 'Amity Island' in Steven Spielberg's 'Jaws' – especially since I'm not entirely sure the story takes place around a body of water large enough to support an urban legend revolving around a shark, never mind the fish itself.

That being said, the effects are very much practical, so that's something worth noting.

M. Night Shyamalan has been doing really well working with Blumhouse though prior to that association Shyamalan almost tanked his career when his ego too control over his film making, resulting in movies like 'Lady in the Water,' 'The Happening,' 'After Earth' and 'The Last Airbender.'

'Trap' looks like a movie where Josh Hartnett is playing a killer who has walking into a trap set by the police.

Now, sure the trap itself is ludicrous but I also get the feeling that the trailer is a red herring, and it's the daughter that's the killer, not the father.

i'm for the most part unaware of who Andy Chen is though 'The Spider' shows us that he can direct a Spider-Man (fan) film that is more faithful to Spider-Man than 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2.'

And that's even taking into account everything going all 'Brundlefly' at the end.

Though don't take my word for it,. judge for yourself:

Jen & Sylvia Soska's 'Festival of the Living Dead' certainly isn't the worse thing you'll see though it isn't by any means the best.

If I were you I'd just watch an early Romero zombie movie and call it a day because this 'Festival' isn't one you should be overly concerned about missing.

If Russell Crowe stars in any more films as a priest he ought to get some sort of award because this is the second movie he's played one (though to be fair 'The Exorcism,' while released in 2024, was completed in 2019 and set on the shelf for four years.

Though to be fair the movie seems to be treating the vocation in a particularly atypical manner.

"Vermines/Infested' is the second movie that's recently turned up revolving around spiders being particularly evil and I'm here for it.

It bugs – ha, ha – me in the case of sharks because we tend to kill them for fairly dumb reasons, while I'm comfortable that arachnids (in general) outnumber humans many times over, never mind occupying an important ecological niche.

And considering many species of arachnid can have hundreds of spiderlings, I think spiders will be okay.

In my reaction to the trailer for 'Dancing Village: The Curse Begins' I mentioned that I don't find Thai and Indonesian horror particularly scary, mainly due to differences in culture though viewers have put on my radar a few trailers for movies that might change my mind.

One of them is 'Pemukiman Setan,' which might have an American remake (which means I need to see the original because it goes almost without saying that they're going to ruin it).

Yeon Sang-ho's 'Parasyte: The Grey' is the second series from the director to premiere on Netflix, and it's an improvement over the first –'Hellbound' (2019) – though there are more that a few issues that are either narrative inconsistencies or catering to the script in ways that viewers might find irritating.

Rob Liefeld has to be among one of the worst artists to have every drawn a comic, while Chris Claremont is one of the best writers in the field.

Guess who apparently gets some love in 'Wolverine & Deadpool?'

Other than that really weird callout, the movie looks like a lot of fun.

I dig horror movies – what 'Refuge' appears to be – that take place during conflicts because war is difficult enough, though when you add the element of the supernatural things can get really interesting and potentially very, very strange.

One of the things that interests me is that Renny Harlin is directing, and since he's one of my favorite directors I'm glad to see more of his work.

I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of Thai horror movies; those that I have seen, at any rate.

Those that I have seen appear deeply invested in the cultures of the regions that they're produced in, but I'm not sure that they work too well on a broader basis.

'Dancing Village - The Curse' looks like there's a chance that it breaks that tendency, but the proof is in the viewing.

Netflix is expanding their Sandman universe with 'Deadboy Detectives' – which is a great title though based on the trailer it appears not unlike a lot of other Netflix shows revolving around young people and magic.

Some of which have already been cancelled.

The connection to Neil Gaiman might draw some in but by my reckoning Netflix churns out so much content – it's what they do – that it might get lost in the shuffle.

Though I'm also really curious why HBOMax – where the project originated – passed on it.

Perhaps it didn't quite fit the programming the streaming channel is looking for?

The concept that powers John Woo's 'Silent Night, – namely an crime thriller without dialog – is a pretty interesting idea though it never becomes integral to the story, always feeling a bit gimmicky.

Hollywood has a problem (though I need to specific because there are just that many).

The issue I'm referring to is the tendency that, if a movie is successful, to throw significantly more money at the sequel.

2019's 'Joker' cost $55 million to produce, while it's sequel, 'Joker: Folle A Deux' cost somewhere in the ballpark of $200 million.

That's a lot more than a movie running around, for the most part, fairly normal people should cost, if you ask me.

The key to enjoying Ti West's 'X' Trilogy begins, like most things, at the beginning.

First, watch 'X,' because it's the first movie in the series.

Now here's the difficult (so to speak) part. Understand that 'X' isn't the story of Maxine (played by Mia Goth) who has more screen time than Pearl (also played by Mia Goth) despite it being her story.

Take that into account you're probably have a good time with 'X' though why the movie itself didn't make that quite clear in the first place is a question for the ages.

'Baghead,' based on the trailer looks like a carbon copy of 2022's 'Talk To Me.'

And sure, if you're going to copy a movie you can do worse that 'Talk To Me,' which is kinda awesome.

Is it just me because I get the feeling that Bill Skarsgård is really gunning for a role in a Marvel movie?

That being said, have you seen 2007's 'Shoot 'Em Up?' I ask because it feels like 'Boy Kills World' is trying to achieve a similar esthetic.

'One Punch Man' is among the most interesting anime for me because Saitama (One Punch Man) is virtually a deity in terms of his destructive power yet he somehow manages to be not only fairly oblivious to his power but deeply, deeply unsatisfied despite being (so far) the most powerful entity in his corner of the universe.

Saitama is like Superman except if Superman were so humble that he almost appeared like arrogance.

He's unstoppable, but takes that for granted and is typically more concerned about catching the specials at his local supermarket.

Dan Steven is blowing up this year.

He appears in 'Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire,' which is doing gangbuster box office as well as 'Cookoo' and speaking of which I'm not sure what's at the heart of the movie though I get the feeling that there might be an Invasion of the Body Snatchers-type' scenario going on.

'Pandemic Sex Party' isn't the story of Boris Johnson during the Covid pandemic, instead it's a slasher movie produced by Andy Gould, who produced all of Rob Zombie's horror movies.

I mention the latter because the movie seems to think most people know who Andy Gould is to such a degree he serves mentioning during the teaser, which is perhaps the weirdest thing about it.

As I mention in my reaction, this movie rides or dies on character development.

Netflix hasn't okayed a second series of 'The Chosen One' as of this review, and it not that's a pity because the story feels very rushed and incomplete.

Gordon Sumner ain't got nothing on this 'Sting!'

I think spiders are sort of awesome but I've been let down before – cough, cough, 'Arachnophobia' – by spider-centric horror movies.

Though 'Sting' looks like it might buck the trend because it appears to understand that you can have laughs with the horror.

The key is take your characters seriously and have them respond as anyone would to a particular situation, as opposed to making them way too clever (which happens A LOT in anything written by Joss Whedon. Sometimes you just don't have a wittier-than-thou comeback).

'Humane' is the first feature from Caitlin Cronenberg, daughter of David and sister of Brandon, which got me thinking about nepo-babies for the second time in a month.

The movie looks like a dark comedy/satire that for some reason reminds me of The Adams Family.
