In 2004, There’s Something About Miriam saw six men vie for the attention of Miriam Rivera, a 21-year-old Mexican model who unbeknown to them had a “secret”: she was transgender. Even before it aired, this British reality-dating show had whipped up a tabloid frenzy, fuelled by the news that the contestants who had wooed Rivera were mounting a legal challenge to stop the show from airing. Lawyers claimed their lack of informed consent equated to a conspiracy to commit sexual assault.
Miriam: Death of a Reality Star retells the story of this queasy moment in pop culture, while also delving into Rivera’s traumatic early life and suspicious death. Yet despite looking back disapprovingly, this three-part documentary attempts to have its cake (sanctimonious dismay) and eat it, too (milking exactly the same tawdry titillation as the original did). There’s Something About Miriam’s horrifying denouement – one of the men reacted violently to the news that Rivera was trans – is teased throughout, meaning the documentary is also powered by the promise of that reveal. (While the original series was removed from circulation by Sky, this documentary re-airs so much footage that it doubles as a worst-of clip show.) Later, it stages a superficial investigation into Rivera’s death. Reality TV was – and still is – grounded in exploitation.
From the start, Miriam: Death of a Reality Star struggles to tell a nuanced story. Woven through the account of the reality show’s chaotic production is a portrait of Rivera’s early life. From family and friends, we learn that she was subject to staggering transphobia at home (her father arranged an exorcism) and dropped out of school after her boyfriend discovered she was trans. Yet there was also joy: Rivera found solace in New York’s ballroom culture and was scouted to join Speed Angels, a UK-based trans pop band.
Speed Angels never took off, but it did lead Rivera to be cast in There’s Something About Miriam. At the time of broadcast, the public perception of trans people was mired in misunderstanding and mockery; this show was, according to its makers, an attempt to remedy that. Considering it was entirely predicated on the eventual shock and horror of the men involved, that argument doesn’t quite ring true.
This documentary doesn’t set out to villainise those men; the two contestants who take part, Toby and Aron, are clearly victims, too. But we get a cartoon baddie in the production executive Jo Juson. She comes across as unrepentant (“Do I think it went beyond any moral codes of conduct? No”) and displays so little empathy that airing her thoughts feels irresponsible.
Generally, however, we are invited to reflect smugly on how far we have come. Yes we can watch agog as shows such as Harry Hill’s TV Burp and Have I Got News for You make eye-watering jokes about Rivera, safe in the knowledge that they would never be told today. But this satisfaction is hollow. The exploitation at the heart of the reality genre remains steadfast: formats still rely heavily on hoaxes (most recently on Hot Mess Summer and The Underdog: Josh Must Win); it’s not hard to see why the former Channel 4 boss Michael Grade called contemporary TV “cruel” just this month. Meanwhile, the marginalisation of trans people in society is by no means a thing of the past.
That dangerous marginalisation comes to the fore in the final episode, as we are told of Rivera’s attempts to cash in on her celebrity through escort work. What happened next remains sketchy, but her last years were seemingly filled with unimaginable horror; there are suggestions of addiction, kidnap, sex trafficking and, ultimately, murder. Rivera’s death was officially ruled a suicide, but her mother and others close to her believe she was killed.

Four Florida teens, including a star football player, were killed in a high-speed police chase after their car spun out of control, flipped over and wrapped around a utility pole.
The deadly pursuit began as officers chased after the Honda CRV, which was reported stolen, as it sped away from cops at 111 mph on April 20, officials said, according to WLBT.
“We confirmed with the Gainesville Police Department that they still had that car entered as stolen, and the officer waited until he had three backup units with him before he initiated the traffic stop,” Bradford County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Brad Smith said, according to the Main Street Daily News.“They did start to pull over on the shoulder of the road, but before they came to a complete stop, they accelerated again, and that is when the chase was on.”
Deputies halted their pursuit at the county line as they could not keep up with the high-speed vehicle.
“The [Florida] Highway Patrol was, at that point, the only vehicle that could actually keep up with them,” Smith said. “Our vehicles cannot match the speed that they were going, but we did continue one of our units to try and stay as close as they could as a backup unit to FHP until Alachua County’s units were able to catch up to them.”
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a trooper joined the pursuit and “identified that some of the occupants appeared to be wearing ski masks.”
“The Trooper made intentional contact with the Honda, causing it to decelerate,” the Highway Patrol said in a statement. “The Trooper used the break in speed to perform a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT maneuver) on the fleeing Honda to stop the threat created by the fleeing suspect. The Honda subsequently rolled over before making contact with a cement pole.”
The tactic involves stopping a fleeing vehicle by forcing it to turn sideways abruptly and steering into it.
Alachua County Fire Rescue responded and described the vehicle as “wrapped around a concrete utility pole.”
It took first responders over 90 minutes to extricate the passengers.
Two were pronounced dead on the scene, while two others were pronounced dead in the hospital.
All of the victims in the horrifying crash two weekends ago in Waldo were between the ages of 14 and 16.
Two have been identified as Newberry High School students Jabril Cheevers and Lawrence McClendon Jr., a sophomore defensive back for the football team whose 18-year-old brother, Jermaine Godbolt, was shot and killed last month, the Main Street Daily News reported.
“It’s concerning when you have so many deaths back to back, but all we can do as a community is wrap our arms around each other, love each other, ask ourselves what we need to be doing, and then do it,” Newberry Mayor Jordan Marlowe, who teaches at the school, told the paper on Thursday.
Tributes shared online remembered McLendon as a star football player.
“Lawrence was a great kid to be around and have in our program,” said Ed Johnson, Newberry’s head football coach. “As a football player he was competitive, talented and relentless with a knack for making big plays. He will be truly missed by everyone in the Panther football family.”
Marlowe said grief counselors and trauma specialists had been on campus all week.

Dummy up. If it's not reported, if it's not news, it didn't happen.
Wax indignant. This is also known as the "How dare you?" gambit.
Characterize the charges as "rumors" or, better yet, "wild rumors." If, in spite of the news blackout, the public is still able to learn about the suspicious facts, it can only be through "rumors." (If they tend to believe the "rumors" it must be because they are simply "paranoid" or "hysterical.")
Knock down straw men. Deal only with the weakest aspects of the weakest charges. Even better, create your own straw men. Make up wild rumors (or plant false stories) and give them lead play when you appear to debunk all the charges, real and fanciful alike.
Call the skeptics names like "conspiracy theorist," "nutcase," "ranter," "kook," "crackpot," and, of course, "rumor monger." Be sure, too, to use heavily loaded verbs and adjectives when characterizing their charges and defending the "more reasonable" government and its defenders. You must then carefully avoid fair and open debate with any of the people you have thus maligned. For insurance, set up your own "skeptics" to shoot down.
Impugn motives. Attempt to marginalize the critics by suggesting strongly that they are not really interested in the truth but are simply pursuing a partisan political agenda or are out to make money (compared to over-compensated adherents to the government line who, presumably, are not).
Invoke authority. Here the controlled press and the sham opposition can be very useful.
Dismiss the charges as "old news."

Change the subject. This technique includes creating and/or publicizing distractions.
Lightly report incriminating facts, and then make nothing of them. This is sometimes referred to as "bump and run" reporting.
Baldly and brazenly lie. A favorite way of doing this is to attribute the "facts" furnished the public to a plausible-sounding, but anonymous, source.
Expanding further on numbers 4 and 5, have your own stooges "expose" scandals and champion popular causes. Their job is to pre-empt real opponents and to play 99-yard football. A variation is to pay rich people for the job who will pretend to spend their own money.
Flood the Internet with agents. This is the answer to the question, "What could possibly motivate a person to spend hour upon hour on Internet news groups defending the government and/or the press and harassing genuine critics?"

In an email to supporters three weeks after the October 2018 death of Holocaust denier Robert Faurisson, English traditionalist Catholic bishop Richard Williamson reconfirmed his belief that the Holocaust is a hoax perpetrated by Jews.
Williamson, who considers himself a leader of the “resistance” against efforts to modernize the Catholic Church, is a former member of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), a Catholic group that rejected the reforms issued by the Second Vatican Council in 1965. Those reforms included the church’s repudiation of the anti-Semitic belief that Jews are responsible for the death of Jesus. Williamson was excommunicated by the Catholic church in 2015 after he ordained another bishop without papal sanction. He was expelled from SSPX in 2012.
In his email, Williamson describes Faurisson, who was one of the world’s foremost Holocaust deniers, as a “real hero” who “stood with unfailing courage and scrupulous accuracy for truth.” As is typical of Holocaust deniers, Williamson does not use that term, and prefers to describe Faurisson as a “revisionist” historian who sees “people all over the world being destroyed today by an untrue version of their history, especially of the Second World War.”
In a barely-veiled reference to Jews, Williamson adds that “the people who hold world-wide power today over politics and the media...have fabricated a hugely false version of World War Two history.” Williamson makes it clear he believes the imposition of this false Holocaust narrative is part of a Jewish effort to “impose a godless New World Order…[and] a fabricated religion to replace Christianity.”
The themes in Williamson’s November 2018 email echo the more explicit allegations he made against Jews in March 2018, when he described Jews as “God’s enemies” who are a “major source of problems in today’s Church [sic] and world.” There he explained that “for Jews, the ‘Holocaust’ is a theological event, central to the new religion which is to be imposed on the entire world, and before which all other religions must bow, starting with Catholicism.” In a frank expression of his anti-Semitism, he continued:
“Jews by their progressive control of politics, universities and the media in particular have more and more taken over people’s minds, and they have used this control granted to them by unwary Gentiles to persuade everybody that Jews are the victims rather than the cause of the constant tensions between themselves and the rest of the world....The Jews have always striven to neutralise [sic] the divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, because if He is not God then Catholicism is nothing, and then the main obstacle to their own ruling of the world is out of the way.”

This Article of Amendment is intimately connected to questions of loyalty, honesty, war and national defense. It is designed to combat internal subversion and discord sowed by people who are adhering to powers foreign to the Congress of the United States without stepping across the bold Constitutional line of treason. The authors of the TONA wrote it after some additional experience with how the British Empire, as well as other European nations, actually [corruptly] conduct their affairs. It is a corrective and supplemental measure to go along with Constitutional treason.
This Article of Amendment added an enforceable strict penalty, i.e., inability to hold office and loss of citizenship, for violations of the already existing constitutional prohibition in Article 1, Section 9, Clause 8 on titles of nobility and other conflicts of citizenship interest, such as accepting emoluments of any kind for services or favors rendered or to be rendered, and is particularly applicable today in the 21st Century as government is increasingly FOR SALE to the highest bidder, as foreign nations and multinational corporations and individuals compete to line the pockets of politicians and political parties to accommodate and purchase protection or privilege for their special interests, i.e. with honors, such as money or allowing dual-citizenships. [Note how many people illegally within government today hold such dual citizenship.]
In terms familiar to the common man, this might quite properly be called the use of bribes and graft by individuals and powers foreign, i.e. external, to the Congress of the United States to subvert the constitutional process and suborn our political system and the interests of WE THE PEOPLE.
After appearing in numerous official publications until 1876, this Article "disappeared" from our Constitution, to be replaced by another made nearly 50 years later [This means what we usually call the "13th" is really the 14th, etc.]. You may well ask how such a thing could have happened. So did we
