Around 2:34 PM on July 27, 2023, Patrolmen Chad Reilly and Andrew Perkins with the Rockaway Township Police Department responded to a report of a shoplifting at Target on 381 Mount Hope Avenue. They entered the store and walked over to the asset protection office. In the asset protection office, they met with the loss prevention officer as well as the alleged shoplifter, who was identified as 22-year-old Shannon.
The loss prevention officer informed the officers that he saw the woman walk past the register and attempt to leave without paying for $358.42 worth of items. He showed them the surveillance footage which corroborated his account of what happened. After the officers reviewed the surveillance footage, Patrolman Reilly informed Shannon that she was under arrest.
The officers were provided with an itemized receipt of the value of the items she had allegedly attempted to steal. Based on the value of the items she had stolen, the store decided to press charges against her. Patrolman Reilly escorted Shannon to the patrol car and transported her to the Rockaway Township Police Department for further processing.
At police HQ, Patrolman Reilly read Shannon her Miranda rights, and she indicated that she did not wish to answer questions. Shannon was finger printed and photographed, and she sat on the bench as the officers completed their paperwork. She was charged with shoplifting under 2C:20-11B(1) and released pending her court appearance.
Court records indicate that on October 4, 2023, Shannon entered no plea in court, and the original charge under 2C:20-11B(1) was given a “Conditional Dismissal.” A total of $633 in fines was assessed against her. Shannon also has 2 previous DWI arrests from Sparta, NJ on March 9, 2022 and Stanhope, NJ on June 22, 2023. Shannon was later arrested again on December 12, 2023 and charged with fencing and dealing stolen property under 2C:20-7.1B(1).
