The Diabetes story is a metaphor of the rapid adoption of a wonder drug without knowing the long term consequences.

And in an age when Hollywood influencers in the media are touting the seemingly miraculous benefits of our latest weight loss wonder drugs GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic, it’s worth examining the long term risks and consequences of heavy handed pharmaceutical interventions.

Did you know that doctors were treating diabetic patients with high-fat low-carb diets all the way back in the 1700s?

Though high-fat ketogenic diets were found to effectively treat diabetes for over a century, they were largely abandoned due to the rapid adoption of insulin in the 1920s, which was considered then to be a miracle cure.

Prioritizing drugs over lifestyle with insulin therapy, however, led to unexpected long term complications in patients, including damage to large and small blood vessels that results in heart disease, strokes, kidney damage, neuropathy, amputations, blindness, dementia, and a decrease in life expectancy.

Once a rare condition, diabetes is now so common that drugstores dedicate entire aisles to it. One in every $4 spent in American healthcare goes to diabetic patients, with over $300 billion in direct costs every year.

Prioritizing drugs over lifestyle with insulin therapy, however, led to unexpected long term complications in patients, including damage to large and small blood vessels that results in heart disease, strokes, kidney damage, neuropathy, amputations, blindness, dementia, and a decrease in life expectancy.

The Diabetes story is a metaphor of the rapid adoption of a wonder drug without knowing the long term consequences.

And in an age when Hollywood influencers in the media are touting the seemingly miraculous benefits of our latest weight loss wonder drugs GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic, it's worth examining the long term risks and consequences of heavy handed pharmaceutical interventions.

Today, we're back with our friend Gary Taubes, an award-winning investigative science and health journalist and bestselling author of “Why We Get Fat” and “Good Calories, Bad Calories,” as well as his new book “Rethinking Diabetes.” Gary has dedicated his work to dismantling conventional nutritional theory with his research lectures and books. And at this point, Gary is better versed in diabetes literature than pretty much anyone alive.

In this episode, we’re chatting about:

Why lifestyle interventions that effectively treated diabetes for over a century were abandoned by the medical establishment

How flawed dietary guidelines in the 1970s recommended high-carb diets for heart health without evidence

Why the modern push ..

Have you ever noticed that your cravings seem to change throughout the seasons?

Our nutritional needs are affected by the time of year, climate and even our geographical location.

The practice of Chinese Medicine, attuning ourselves to our environment and living in harmony with nature is fundamental to achieving optimal health.

Today, we're here with Ellen Goldsmith, a licensed and board certified acupuncturist, Chinese herbalist, and author of the book “Nutritional Healing with Chinese Medicine.”

On this episode, we’re chatting about:

• How to identify food sensitivities and improve digestion with ancient principles from Chinese Medicine
• The concept of qi or vitality in foods and emphasizing locally grown seasonal whole foods with a diverse flavor profile
• Physical techniques and exercises to build and maintain vigor and vitality
• How to include all five flavors in every meal to feel more satisfied
• Why eating dinner for breakfast can help avoid cravings for unhealthy snacks later in the day
• And much more…

Are your training methods preventing injury or causing them? As the years tick by, how can we move the goalposts to make sure we’re training for the right reasons? Watch the full interview with Chaz: https://fatburningman.com/chaz-branham-how-to-overcome-catastrophic-injury-with-the-eldoa-method

Chaz Branham is a venture capitalist, athlete and lifelong health nut, who you may remember back in 2013 entered in the Texas Shredder Classic, his first bodybuilding competition, on a dare—and did ridiculously well and even earned a spot on the podium by using a fat-based approach (quite unique at the time).

This dude is a life-long athlete and beast. Back then in his mid-twenties, Chaz was fresh off his first bodybuilding competition, where he achieved an astonishing 3.5% body fat naturally and earned his place on the podium. Now in his late 30’s, it’s fascinating to examine how our lives and goals have changed.

Are you a nose-breather or a mouth-breather?

I sat down for lunch recently with a few old friends, and one of them asked: “Abel, what is the most underrated performance hack in health and fitness?”

I said without hesitation, “nasal breathing.”

When you learn to harness the power of the breath, you can rewire your entire nervous system, which has vast implications for your health, performance, and even your personality. The state of our nervous system directly impacts our quality of life and ability to enjoy life's challenges.
