Berlin School

The music of '70s sequencer pioneers like Edgar Froese (of Tangerine Dream) and Klaus Schulze. Also the work of those from later decades who use sequencers in a similar way, like Rudy Adrian and Ron Boots.

Berlin School has a distinctive sound but all these artists also work without sequencers and produce music in a variety of styles.

Videos are sorted in chronological order according to the release date of the original music, so the older releases come before the newer ones. If two or more items have the same release date they are sorted according to their running time, with the shortest video(s) first.

Released in 1970. This was the very first Tangerine Dream album and of historical interest for that reason alone. Early vinyl copies are now sought after and can fetch several hundred dollars in good condition. The music itself is not an easy listen and doesn't bear much resemblance to their later work. It is a measure of how crude the technology was in 1969 when this was recorded. The rapid development of analog synths in the early '70s transformed their sound. This can be seen if this album is compared to their first massive hit 'Phaedra', released just four years later in 1974.

At the time of release this was an unpopular and controversial album with fans, although it did have a measure of commercial success. It marked a change in line up with the departure of Peter Baumann, the addition of a specialist drummer/percussionist Klaus Krieger and the return of Steve Joliffe. a woodwind expert and vocalist.

Joliffe's woodwind contribution was seen as a positive but his ragged and unsettling vocals were not. They were always going to be a source of controversy for a band known for almost a decade for purely instrumental music. As one reviewer wrote ..."Shut up and play yer flute!"

Richard Wahnfried (sometimes just 'Wahnfried') is an alias of Klaus Schulze and usually used when he is leading a collaboration with other artists. As is the case here (see below) he sometimes uses both names in the credits for different roles in making a recording.

The album was originally released on 12" vinyl intended to be played at 45 rpm. There have been at least 7 reissues in various formats, including CD's, without alterations to the music until, in 2012, a double CD was released with both tracks slowed down in their entirety by 26%.

This was given the slightly different title of 'Richard Wahnfried's Tonwelle'. It emulates the sound achieved by playing the original vinyl at 33⅓ rpm, something which most owners of the original will have done by mistake at some point. To my ears this "version" sounds ridiculous but there is nothing to suggest Klaus Schulze himself disapproved.
