Maeror Tri

Maeror Tri was founded in 1988 by Stefan Knappe, Martin Gitschel and Helge Siehl, all from the town of Leer in the extreme North West corner of Germany close to the border with The Netherlands. They disbanded in 1996 due to the departure of Helge Siehl to do solo work. Their approach was to build an archive of recorded work (including live performances) and then edit this at a later date to create albums, rather than record albums for their own sake. This is why material was often released years after it was recorded and releases continued long after 1996.

Unlike most other electronic musicians their distinctive drone sounds were derived by processing guitars and acoustic samples rather than keyboards.

Videos are sorted in chronological order according to the release date of the original music, so the older releases come before the newer ones. If two or more items have the same release date they are sorted according to their running time, with the shortest video(s) first.

First released in 1989 on audio-cassette. Quickly re-released in 1990 on the same format.

Two of the tracks on the 1989 version were substituted on the 1990 version, namely 'Small Faces' for 'Cursed Colours' and 'Growing Rotation' for 'Endless Space'. The other nine tracks remained the same and so did the running order.

The 1990 version is used here. The artwork is from a later release on CD which also features the 1990 tracklist.

Released in 1990 on audio-cassette.

This is a joint release, not a collaboration. Each band is offering its own music separately and there is no artistic co-operation. The 'A' side of the original cassette features five tracks by Maeror Tri with nine, mostly shorter tracks by Nostalgie Eternelle on the 'B' side.

Both bands are German and focus on dark themes but the similarity doesn't really extend to anything else. The drone style of Maeror Tri contrasts quite sharply with the stripped down, minimalist synth style of Nostalgie Eternelle, characterised by basic drum machines and pained Eurovocals.

This was the first release on CD by Maeror Tri. The tracks express the four basic characters which appear in nearly all cases of Multiple Personality Disorder.

The Administrator: Neither positive nor negative, a kind of balance which makes existence possible.

The Anaesthetizer: Flight into a dream world, stupefaction, forgetting reality, drowning and intoxication.

The Revenger: Pure hatred, destruction, self-mutilation.

The Protector: The lover, security, warmth, a big shelter.

Released in 1993 on cassette.

Two limited editions of the cassette were issued, each of 50 copies, with different artwork on the inserts. Limited releases were later made on CD in 2000 and 2011 of 110 copies and 270 copies respectively.

The entire album consists of recordings played backwards. The originally performed/sampled sound can be recreated by putting the mp4 into a video editor and reversing the play direction. It sounds quite good and would have made a decent album played forwards.

The recordings were made between September 1991 and August 1992. The CD releases have an extra track 'Dusa', recorded in October 1994 (not included here).

A single recorded in 1994 and released in 1995 on 7" white vinyl in a limited edition of 333 copies.

Packaged in a cork sleeve, the disc has Mystagogus on Side A and Ousia on Side B. Mystagogus sounds like an open air gig from a distance of 2 miles performed on a windy day.

Released in 1998 on 10" 33⅓rpm vinyl.

Maeror Tri disbanded in 1996 so this material was recorded at least two years before release. It was released only on vinyl in an unusual 10" format and in a limited edition of 434 numbered copies.

It's considered to be a single, in spite of its length, with Pleroma on the A side and Altrove on the B side. It's also a full picture disc with a different image on each side, adding even more to its likely future appeal as a collector's item.
