We do not teach kids the adult versions of our defensive techniques. That would be highly irresponsible of us. We only put those on our Patreon section to not upset YouTube.
This technique is the first one we teach them as it contains most of our core principles. Protect, disrupt his mental game plan, and strike in one movement while controlling your distancing and angle of attack.
Minimizing the damage inflicted to mitigate the blowback that will result from your child defending himself is another item we try to build in to the movements for children.
Done in Kfar Adumim, Israel in our new but not completed dojo with myself and Yehoshua Kadosh, my senior student who is an 8th Dan, Kyoshi, with a Daishihan Menjo (Master Instructor's Teaching License).

Real Karate. Not Sport. Learn from a Military Science and Tactics instructor specializing in Individual Tactical Training. We do Seminars worldwide. The details are on our website www.academy-of-ryukyu-kenpo.info. I enjoy teaching people who WANT to learn! With Albert Geraldi's passing, only Greg Lindquist and I are left from the original bunch. Greg is more of a Kata guy, I'm the fighter and tactics guy. I don't teach that namby-pamby stuff passing itself off as Ryukyu Kempo these days.

Took long enough but, we finally got it leveled out, kicking posts put in, the barrier that prevents grass and other things from growing up through our artificial grass, and lastly, the artificial grass that allows us to teach without mud or dust interfering with our teaching. Now we can work the Bo Kata and other things that can only be taught in an open area. We tend to teach in small groups and private lessons like the Masters of old did before the sportification of the arts took place (and ruined it!).
Now, the usual pontifications:

This is what Bogu Kumite used to look like in 1983-4. We still have point bogu but that is reserved for those who can't migrate to the newer more violent version. The crowd noises were so extreme (screaming, yelling, etc.) that it was decided to mute them. When I learn how to add voice-overs I will start doing so. Until then ---
Do not think Bogu Kumite is how you would defend yourself against asocial violence. Those events are not competitions and require a totally different form of violent responses that result in death, crippling, or maiming of the opponent.

Training needs not to be anywhere near as vigorous as actual competition. Training TOO hard can be detrimental to your health and progress in learning. It should be an experience that is non-threatening and can be fun if done with a partner who is of the same mindset. David and Yoshi, even though the day is blistering hot, are having a good time improving their skills. I will show some videos of students training, and then I have one of what Tournament Championship matches at the Gold (Expert) level are like and another of the lower levels' competition. Do not think Bogu Kumite is how you would defend yourself against asocial violence. Yoshi and David seem to have gotten carried away a bit right before the Second round but they calmed down and took a short break before resuming.

Okay! The Bogu was filmed in our Jerusalem Dojo as were the Demo clips. The kids (everyone has signed permission to film in their contracts) at our secondary Dojo in Jerusalem and at Gan Sacher in Jerusalem. Yoshi and his brother-in-law at various places in Kfar Adumim. The "self-defense" techniques are designed to catch the attention and are NOT our taught asocial techniques. Ephriam has become very serious about his Ryukyu Kenpo Kobujutsu training since it became obvious to him about the massive health benefits it imparts. Working out with the bag and Makiwara, has improved his skeletal alignment to the point that he can walk straightened up. His shoulders have relaxed so he has greater mobility and no pain in his upper body. He's also lost 50 pounds and is losing more as he continues his private lessons at our home dojo.

First I want to apologize for the wind. That is why we are building our own dojo. So we won't have all of the noise pollution that the other sites are afflicted with.
Now that you have built your Proper Makiwara (How to construct a proper Makiwara (Machiwara), you can see how to Properly USE your Makiwara. Machiwara is the way the Okinawan language pronounces Makiwara.
My way. But. Every principle. Every idea came from Master Shigeru Nakamura and his student Master Seiyu Oyata. If not for them, I would be less. Again, the original posted seven years ago had over 5,000 views.
Yehoshua Kadosh was behind the camera. Without him, y'all would not be seeing much of anything.

Instructions with pictures of everything you will need to construct a 'traditional' style makiwara. One with proper give that will build your punching structure without damaging your knuckles, wrist, or elbow. And step-by-step instructions as I built one for my use. This video had 41,173 views on my previous site. It's been updated a bit. Machiwara is the way the Okinawan language pronounces Makiwara.

"REAL" KARATE - IS WHAT WE TEACH!
For close to five decades, the Academy has taught Ryukyu Kenpo Kobujutsu (琉球 拳法 古武術). Traditional Oriental teachings with modern Western training methods. Full contact Bogu sparring for distancing, timing, power development, angles of attack, and desensitization training is utilized. Proper focus on targets, striking, and body weapons done slowly for memory retention is emphasized. Modern and improvised weapons are taught. It comes from one of the oldest, and most effective, military combat systems ever developed. It is REAL Karate the kind that was taught before "modern" systems, when advanced students and Masters were FEARED and it was only taught to professionals whose careers dealt with life and death situations in Okinawa, its birthplace. Right! Karate is NOT Japanese! It is Okinawan. It means "China Hand". The Japanese used a Kanji that sounds the same but means 'Empty' (as in space) to remove its Chinese origins. The Japanese and, in turn, both the Koreans and the Western world turned it into a martial sport that is a joke and inferior to the original in asocial street violence. This system is designed for adults and mature teens. The training is difficult, dangerous, and demanding. It takes perseverance, high motivation, a good mind, and, an unwillingness to compromise standards. The system teaches violence control and prevention recognizing that "self-defense" is a misnomer utilized to circumvent the ugly truth that it takes violence to stop or repel violence. Improvised and standard weapons are included in the training, where possible. It was always meant to supplement a soldier's battlefield repertoire of techniques and ideas to keep him alive and functioning in that hostile environment. As a result, this system is not for exercise or sport. It was taught in near secrecy for more than three decades, wrapped in a cloak of civilian applications. In 2023 the decision was made to open it up for the rest of the world to have the benefit of learning it, in its entirety.
